They are often discredited for considerably being the first Thrash Metal band before Metallica was claimed to release their popular "Kill 'Em All". Stress' lead member was Roosevelt "Bala" Cavalcante. He grew up listening to early Rock and Heavy Metal groups such as Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Led Zeppelin etc. He originally jammed with the other members in 1975 and two years they really got serious and strived for something very rebellious to society. Seeing as their town was a provincial town of Bethlehem (Jesus' birthplace), they really did have something to rebel against and the trends and media only furthered this.
They were originally called Pingo D'water; named after a bass drum company called penguin and did cover songs for various Metal and Rock bands. the line up started as Andr? Chamon - drums, Leonardo Income - keyboard, Roosevelt Bala - vocals, Wilson Mota - guitar and Paul Lee - bass. They were all at the ages of 14 and 15. They primarily worked as a school band and birthday parties. Paul Lee was kicked out of the band in 1976 and was replaced by Peter Valente; for Paul's lack of talent. Peter was considered a very reputable musician which drove them to implement their own creativity ...And the birth of Stress had begun.
Stress did their first official gig in 1977 and then were officially called a band. Peter took charge of the band and did a lot to help them rise to fame! They frequently looked for different places to perform and they were constantly received the status as something very memorable because, of their intense affect on the town's headbangers. Their town was so pleased with their music that they actually helped promote Stress through posters, t-shirts, tickets etc. This enabled them to go bigger places.
In 1978 they started composing their own material and it was done in English to convey strong evil, Heavy Metal literature. The influences in that era included Judas Priest and Saxon, which they shown a more recent fascination for. They re-did their songs in Portuguese due to multiple requests from the local fans and cautiously stored their material to pursue them to keep staying motivated. Although many of the members attended school, they were still active and became a big influence for other local musicians.
In 1982 Roosevelt Bala decided to take over as a bass player while managing to do vocals. He felt that Wilson Mota wasn't keeping up with the bands improvements. It was also easier for Roosevelt because, he and many of the members were ending college and would have more time to work together more frequently. Since they had made enough money they were ready to record an album. They worked eight hours in two consecutive days to complete it. The results of it were astonishing because, they had made it more Heavier than ever and this even would call them the first Metal band in all of Brazil. It was a big success for them.
Their 1982 album was self-titled "Stress". twenty thousand fans had visited a stadium for them to announce their release. This truly showed how important they were for Brazilian Metal music however, they could only release one thousand copies because, they weren't apart of any major record labels and were independent at the time. It has eight songs and ran approximately thirty six minutes in length. It was re-released twice. This album was unofficially considered the first Thrash Metal album and it brought a musical transition into place.
In 1985 they quickly changed their style to Speed Metal and Roosevelt Bala intentionally changed his vocal style to a sound in vein of Judas Priest and released an album called "Flor At?mica" which featured some of the songs off their previous album. After their success of the first album they were actually offered by various labels and come to the ration of joining Polygram Records. A few lineup changes occurred and one of their guitarists named Christian actually died along the way but, nonetheless Stress was on their game and was faster than ever.
Stress went back to an independent band because, their time with Polygram Records was up and they were not inclined to work for them any further. In 1996 they released a more obscure album called "III" and it was generally unrecognized for it's transition into traditional Heavy Metal. However, over the years Stress was fairly recognized for their high success in Brazil and even released a live DVD called "Ao Vivo!". Nowadays, they are have multiple tribute and compilation CDs featured.
