Pop rock world fusion by way of Venus.
Bio / Background
The Mighty Parrot Band plays music that sounds like string theory margaritas under the boardwalk on mars without shoes tomorrow. Somehow that's true.
The eagerly awaited follow up to 1998's "Still Waiting for Godot" is "Radio Free Europa". 15 tracks loosely tied together as a spurious pirate radio broadcast. The songs have snappy rhythms, memorable melodies, thoughtful lyrics, and exciting production work.
( A Great Headphone CD folks!)
"Carefree party music with a deep creative twist." -Bernadette Hayes , SHOUT magazine
The lyrics are often perceptive and subterranean while remaining entertaining & bubbly .
This CD has an overall merry vibe to it even when the lyrics take that shadowy curious left turn.
The band's work has been likened to Jimmy Buffet possessed by Frank Zappa's ghost, set on fire by Peter Gabriel, Bob Marley, & Robert Fripp, while John Fogerty & Bela Bartok jam with Brian Eno, Paul Simon & the Skatellites in the background.
(...
↓ more ↓they have been compared to all these artists at one time or anther).
There is some fine guitar work & righteous Tube tones From Kelly May & Ben New on this CD as well.
The Band resides at the Jersey shore and performs live regularly. They have opened for Richie Havens, Jefferson Starship, and the Brothers Neville.
Why Pirate Radio? Songwriter Ben New says
"It is an ode to the off shore unlicensed radio broadcasters of the past.
Yet it resonates today as pirate broadcasting is enjoying a resurgence on air and on the net.
(It never really left.) why do we like the internet so much?
As radio changes, Pirate Radio may have a huge roll to play in it's future.
Today, stations are owned in groups of a hundred or more by gigantic corporations.
They are primarily concerned with demographics, marketing, focus groups, & ratings.
The current system awards "official access" to the airwaves only to those with tons of money.
This is objectionable and in conflict with principles of freedom. The air belongs to all of us.
Don't like what they say? change the frequency or turn it off.
Question authority.
Remain skeptical.
Here's to the Airwave Pirate.
The CD is assembled to resemble a typical broadcast from "the Airwave Pirate" on his Radio Free Europa station.
The name refers satirically to Radio Free Europe, which was broadcast into communist countries during the cold war
and was indeed a pirate station in it's own right.
Radio Free Europa gets its name because it broadcasts at such high wattages
it easily reaches Europa, a moon of Jupiter.
Whether perceived as heroes or villains, the true stories of these unlicensed broadcasts is interesting.
Radio London, Radio Caroline, Radio Veronica etc. made huge impacts because
there was no play list (D.J.s played what they liked.) and were allegedly very entertaining.
When they got into hot water with authorities, the public usually came out to show support.
Pete Townsend of the Who, has said that he was a big fan of Radio London in the pirate days.
Most of the links on our web page deal with European Pirates but there were and are plenty of "free radio" stations
from Canada to Paraguay, from the U.S. to Israel to Africa.
Anywhere someone has something to say, or feels strongly that a musical genre isn't being represented
radio pirates will raise an antennae just as the pirates of the past hoisted the Jolly Roger. "
The Mighty Parrot Salutes you! (so play our songs! Alright?)
