American composer David Carlson (b. 03/13/1952) works in a wide variety of genres and styles. He studied music at the Los Angeles High School of the Arts and at the California Institute of the Arts. The recipient of a number of awards and honors, he has received grants from Meet the Composer and commissions from Chamber Music America, the a cappella vocal group Chanticleer and opera companies in New York, Utah, California, Missouri and Florida. In 1995 he was given an Academy Award in composition by the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
He has composed three operas (Anna Karenina (2007), Libretto by Colin Graham;
Dreamkeepers (1996), Libretto by Aden Ross; and The Midnight Angel (1993), Libretto by Peter S. Beagle), two cello concertos, a violin concerto and numerous other vocal, chamber and orchestral works. A recent work includes a an orchestral work written for American soprano Christine Brewer.
