Carson Metzger has been accused of being the same as everyone else. And it shows in his songwriting. A typical singer-songwriter who thinks, typically, that his sound is original, Carson cut his alt-folk baby teeth playing in such luminous alternative/indie bands as Boodgand (Houston, TX) and Bellacircus (Boston, MA). His drab style and deepening crow's feet have most recently been sited in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He once fell off a balcony trying to fit into a tight pair of indie spectacles so he dropped the hipness for alt-folk humdrum.
Carson's clich?d lyrics are indebted to the contemporary drudgery of Neutral Milk Hotel's Jeff Mangum, Iron and Wine's Sam Beam, Joanna Newsom, Sufjan Stevens and other pass? luminaries like Pink Floyd's Roger Waters, Randy Newman, Paul Simon, and the sweet falsetto harmonies of ELO's Jeff Lynne. He shares interests in science with Andrew Bird, and history with Iron Maiden, and turns to The Flaming Lips, Sonic Youth, Broken Social Scene, and Spinal Tap to remember what a real original sounds like.
Carson has been observed seeking lyrical influence in nursery rhymes, funeral homes, embarrassed assholes, and the lilting of an intimate's cheekbones.
Carson's live performances showcase his acoustic-guitar playing, animated by frenzied vocals, and playful lyricism. His alt-folk songwriting will be featured on a forthcoming album, Carson Metzger's Nova Anatomia of Gods and Bodies, recorded and produced with fellow musician Adam Hoox. Carson and Adam are the founders of Permanent records.
Witnesses claim to have heard Carson's voice on a series of prior recordings under the singer-songwriter pseudonym Lex is Morphing. The recently disappeared Lex, writing on the inleaf of his first album-1998's Ol' Cousin One Nutz Favorites-muses:
