Cabins in the Forest are a Cape Town based acoustic duo that began writing and gigging together in mid 2006. The song writing is eclectic, making use of didgeridoo, 12-string & lapsteel guitar. It is somewhat of a nu-folk, americana, jazz, rock fusion. They have developed a reputation for their captivating and intimate live performances as just a duo where as their album features a full band and subtle use of indian signatures such as sitar and tabla. The sound is curious at times, refusing to push the usual buttons but seems to lodge itself firmly into the hearts of those it speaks to.
"This duo's evocative, intelligent gloom rock tunes whose sophisticated at times Peter Gabrielish melodies and melancholic insightfulness are perhaps indefinable yet totally rebellious against what is considered ?the norm.?
Fusing blues, jazz, folk and treason rock they manage to create a totally spaced out lonely road driving companion that lingers in the crevices of the psyche long after the guitar is cased and the stage abandoned. Though many of the songs are devoid of actual hooks their fine arrangement and laid back grooves often just verging on a 1970s rock aesthetic are both sleek and charming. For me there is a certain unaffected nostalgia to the songs. Though because of their concentration on the composition's incantation they are trying to achieve could at times be perceived as self indulgent their effortless talent and comfortable interaction with the audience hardly distances the viewer from the viewed. It's difficult to pin point these gentle savages with far flung ideas, the best you can do is wallow, listen and be totally awestruck."
