Born as NeTorrey McGill ZOD was born and raised in Flint, MI...ZOD is a product of hip-hop from its birth to where it currently is today. ZOD got his nickname from the main villain in the movie Superman II. ?I like the way he had no idea where he was. But he knew he wanted to take over. No matter what! And thats how I feel,? He's stated that he feels that he came up in a perfect time and era for the art-form that he holds so dear. ?I feel like my conception was perfect timing. I came up while rap was still a baby itself.
so we've been growing together..rap is like my older brother. I've been around to see the best do it. And at the same time I'm able to keep those elements of what I enjoyed so much about the music then, and incorporate it into what I like about the music now.? Torrey (as his family calls him) grew up around music. Trips to his grandmother's house turned into all of his 6 uncles having a jam session with the live instruments. But that was just part of the fascination with music. Torrey grew up loving movies like, ?Beat Street, Krush Groove, and Breakin'anything that had to do with the hip-hop culture. Some of the artists that influenced him growing up were RUN-DMC, Big Daddy Kane, Eric B & Rakim, Public Enemy, and EPMD just to name a few. He know sites his favorites as Ghostface, Jay Z, Redman and Young Jeezy.
At an early age he began recording music with childhood friends in his own little makeshift studio. There were two radios. One to play the instrumental and another to record them rapping in between the radios. This is where it all began. Today he has put together a "real" studio where he is known to spend hours upon hours. Later on his love for music grew stronger as his talent was becoming more evident. As the years went on he continued rapping and started making his own beats to rap to. He used to invite friends over to freestyle with him and record over the beats that he made. It was all in fun, but people started to realize that he was actually good.
A couple of years later ZOD met a co-worker/friend who had the same love for music. But this guy had a studio set up in his moms basement. Which was far better quality than he was used to recording on at the time. From this point on he started to form a group which assumed the name ?Team Chaos?. Team Chaos had/has about ten members. This had them drawing comparisons to the Wu-Tang Clan. He also had his hand in another company started amongst friends and other local artists in which they released a compilation album. This proved to be an unsuccessful venture due to egos, and gripes about the amount of attention his team were receiving from this project. Afterwards he put out several Team Chaos mixtapes and was one of the first putting out mixtapes in the area. Seeing that he is always studying the game and its trends, he took note from the East Coast artists that were doing them and he wanted to bring that aspect home. His focus was totally on trying to get Team Chaos noticed. He also went to school for web design, graphic arts and business law. All for the sake of the music. He worked hard to put something together for the crew but life came into play. As members moved away, enlisted in the military, started families, and some got into trouble with the law. It became pretty hard trying to get everyone in the studio as people started to loose their drive or just put priority on things other than music.
This is where his solo career began. Since then ZOD has released several solo mixtapes to great acclaim. An EP and a full length album he produced himself in which reviews compared his music to the likes of Jay Z, 50 Cent, and the Wu Tang Clan. He's done numerous guest appearances and live shows opening for major acts and headlining himself. Has gotten heavy rotation on local radio in which the dj raved about his talent and couldn't believe he was a local artist, and has just been all out grinding. He just recently, basically quit his good paying job in an attempt to have more time to focus on his music. He is constantly working on his craft and looking for ways to improve. He's got it in overdrive now. Lets see what this man can do!
