The Volkovtrio are from St.Petersburg, Russia, and formed in 1995. They are often considered a jazz band, but their music deviates very far from jazz standards and could equally be considered avant garde. They have also fused elements of ethnic music, particular in their work with Russian folklorist and musician Sergei Starostin. Their members have been involved in many areas of Russian music, from the avant garde (with such notable artists as Sergei Kuriokhin to the more rock-pop end of things (with artists such as Zhanna Aguzarova), as well as in writing film scores.

In recent years they have worked closely with Leonid Fedorov of the longstanding and popular Russian 'artrock' band, AukcYon.
If you are attentive you may spot a cameo appearance by Vladimir Volkov in the Russian film of 2006, 'Piter FM'. The main character, Masha, is standing at a metal park gate, opening and closing it to listen to it squeak, and he comes along carrying his contrabass and they share a little chuckle about what she is doing.
