With a literary acumen and delivery leaning towards that of Bob Dylan and Nation of Ulysses, The Weather Underground are an amalgam of many things: elements of late 70's punk movement; a penchant for 50's rock n roll and skiffle; a pureness of early 60's soul; rounded off in a juxtaposition of earnestness and immediacy.
Having been compared to newer bands like The Walkmen, Kings of Leon, and the Libertines -- their sound and presence is one all of their own. Their Ep has been described as such, "...the story telling style of Tom Waits, the poetry of the Beat generation, the undeniable Nina Simone/Beatles styled delivery of 'Nickel and Dime' ..."
They hope to make music together for a very long time and that chemistry eminates on stage. Their live shows has a "must see" word of mouth buzz at the roots level.
They have Just played Treasure Island Music Festival (with Modest Mouse, Spoon, Built to Spill, and Earlimart) W.U. have done a few west coast & southwest tours (including 2007 SXSW and a stint at the Hyperactive Music Festival 2007) and are regularly playing the west coast.
The band has been promoting their self-released debut EP " When I was a Soldier" recently released in May 2007.
Whilst their 2nd EP (to be released in early fall 2007) is getting some anticipated buzz.
It was recorded with Raymond Richards (Mojave 3, Hope Sandavol, Idaho Falls), Wendy Wang (Sweet Hurt, Let's Go Sailing) and Dan Long (Ferraby Lionheart, The Broken West) at Red Rockets Glare Studios in Los Angeles. The record features Jimmi Cabeza de Vaca of Dios (Malos) and Gabe (a los angeles street trumpet player and performer).
