The Tangible Ears is based in Kingston, Ontario. This all-male sextet, who are all under the age of 20, are individually accomplished musicians: Maximilian Beninger on drums, Angus Benderavage on trumpet, Dave Farnell on alto sax, Julian Flavin on piano, Nigel Ward on guitar and Evan Mullen on bass. Flavin and Ward double on vocals. Their first CD, Hear The Ear, is a demo, to be followed up by a full length CD in the fall of 2007. All songs and arrangements are original.
Hear The Ear has a jazzy but soulful sound, with a light touch that suggests the musicians have much more life experience than most people acquire by the time they are 30. The choice of material is solid; the sequence of tunes is well thought out. This is a CD that will appeal to very mature younger listeners, as well as to more seasoned music fans. Listeners would benefit from a lyric sheet , because the vocals are perhaps not as crisp as they could be. A nice touch, also, would be the addition of some vocals in a lower range doing some harmonic underpinning. Maybe the band's barrel-chested trumpet player could put his perfect pitch to good effect by adding some vocal accompaniment to the upcoming full length CD.
