Annie Q (Devon), Glenda Pescado (West Wales), Nick Danger (Surrey) and Will Whitney (Devon) come together once or twice a year to play and record as The Surf Messengers. We've been playing together as this combo for over 10 years now and have an understanding that allows us to improvise creatively in many different set-ups: sometimes as a straight beat combo; sometimes as a experimental cell; but, more often than not, as a combination of these.
All the music is created without prior discussion.
We have a deep love of the lo-tech, a high pain threshold and an absolute inability to take ourselves too seriously.
Annie, when not trying to find out what noises a milk bottle can make, plays flute, sax and clarinet and creates wistfully twisted lyrics.
Glenda, if not playing the bass, loves to manipulate noise and mess with off-centred and otherwise effected records as well as heavily-treated, sampled and looped guitars and such like.
Nick is essentially a drummer who thinks the whole world is a drumkit; he also likes to explore unlikely sound sources usually involving the juxtaposition of household objects and is often seen with his trusty dictaphone to hand.
Will basically likes hitting things with varying degrees of violence: sometimes suspended gearbox housings but more normally just a guitar or a keyboard.
(We are also sometimes blessed with the contributions of others; most notably Phony Reality on "excerpts" and "T50 + 1", and Pragito/Steve Higgins on "Relentless").
