There are at least two artists who go by the name of String Theory. 1. String Theory was an electronic music band from Chicago, USA that existed from 1996 until 2005. Their releases included the albums Anhedonia (2002) and Radiovalerian (2004). 2. Los Angeles performance group String Theory is a performance ensemble dedicated to creating innovative work. Chicago's String Theory (1996 - 2005) was spawned in 1996 when Nate Tucker and Josh Davison moved into a loft and couldn't play rock music any more due to bad soundproofing and a cantankerous landlord.

Chicago's String Theory (1996 - 2005) was spawned in 1996 when Nate Tucker and Josh Davison moved into a loft and couldn't play rock music any more due to bad soundproofing and a cantankerous landlord. Forced to come up with music they could play together without annoying the neighbours, they started experimenting with an old PCM drum machine, live bass and keyboards. They went through several names, performing sporadically between 1997 and 1999 as Shiznaus, Joachim and the Professor, and Onna Tarashi, and finally playing their first show as String Theory in July 2000.
String Theory's music comes across as a reflection of the dynamic personalities at work behind the scenes: both perfectionist and playful, simultaneously mechanized and emotionally evocative. They describe their work in a quintessentially technical manner, saying it "contains (but is not limited to) percussive sounds arranged in a rhythmic manner with tonal sounds of synthetic and/or acoustic origin occurring simultaneously and/or in a specific order which was dictated to various machines." In non-geekspeak that translates to "melodies woven from percussive samples overlayed with harmonies from digital sources as well as real instruments."
Los Angeles' String Theory is a hybrid of sonic sculpture, dance, and music. Their signature instrumentation revolves around a series of handmade Long-String Harps. The Harp strings can extend to lengths of up to one thousand feet and attach to architecture, both indoors and outside. The Harps create the landscape in which the group's kinetic performances unfold. Each installation is site-specific, making each performance experience unique to the environment.
