Story of M is a Los Angeles based indie pop band fronted by singer/songwriter Emilie Bernstein. Growing up as the daughter of a film composer gave Emilie a unique insight into the marriage of music and drama, which she has incorporated into her own songwriting. "I originally wanted to be a writer and a poet but I found that the music was inescapably part of me, in my blood, so to speak." Emilie chose the name Story of M because it felt personal yet at the same time still mysterious.
"I didn't want to play out using my own name because my band is really important to me and I don't see myself as a solo artist. I love the camaraderie that develops between a group of musicians playing together on a stage."
Emilie, guitarist Lucas Eskin, and drummer Devon Collins have been friends since they were growing up in Santa Barbara, California. "We reunited in Los Angeles after college" explains Emilie, where they formed the now defunct band Eve's Garden. "Eve's Garden was our baby band where we honed our performing skills and searched for like-minded musicians to play with. Lucas was originally on bass, but after we went through something like our 3rd guitar player we decided to switch him to the guitar and look for another bass player. Once we found Peter Aragon (bass) and Lilly Acuyd (trumpet and keyboards) our direction changed, becoming more introspective and edgier." Thus Story of M was born.
"We had previously recorded our own demos, but when it came time to record our album These Little Crimes we hired producer Ian LeFeuvre. I had heard the Andy Stochansky record 5 Star Motel and loved the sound of it, so I contacted Ian by e-mail and lo and behold he e-mailed me back. Our relationship developed from there. He was a perfect fit for us because he allowed me to maintain my original vision of the songs while at the same time infusing them with his own sensibilities. I'm really happy with the outcome of this album, and look forward to getting out there and playing it live."
