Stephen "Static Major" Garrett is an African-American producer and singer/song-writer from Louisville, Kentucky. He has worked with artists such as Aaliyah, Ginuwine, Destiny's Child, Brandy, and JoJo.
A number of his songs have appeared in Films as well as games. He has also worked with other producers. For example, Scott Storch, Timbaland, Dr. Dre, and Jazze Pha. More recently, he has worked with Pretty Ricky on their album as well as David Banner's single "Crank It Up" as well as with Tank.
He is signed to the Blackground record label where he found his first breakthrough working with Ginuwine. The single "Pony" became a major hit. He then worked with Aaliyah and Playa. He went on to produce a single for Aaliyah, "Are You That Somebody?" from the Dr. Dolittle soundtrack. Some see this single as the point at which Aaliyah became famous.
He is also part of the R&B trio, Playa, who at one point were signed to Def Jam. He is also pursuing a solo career at present.
His comes from a very musical family. He sung in his church's choir, where his sister played piano and his mother was the musical director. His father, who is a Pastor, is very musically inclined.
Steve Garrett is a new breed of singer/songwriter...a lyrical and musical purveyor of grand themes like love and forgiveness passionately and creatively woven together into a very accessible modern sound. Although he has drawn comparisons to John Mayer, Dave Matthews, and Steven Curtis Chapman, Steve's emotional vocals and powerful songs crackle with originality. And don't hold your breath for trite, scratch-the-surface content. Some of his writing will leave you standing out in wide open spaces, staring up a the sky. And some of it will make you want to crank up the car stereo and find an open highway.
Yes, Steve is an emerging acoustic pop rock artist who originated in Philly where he managed to generate a massive buzz as the frontman, lead vocalist, guitarist, and principle writer for Pilgrim's Progress - a pop rock / worship band he founded in '97 with two of his brothers and sister. After releasing their first indie project in '99, Pilgrim's Progress started gathering a significant fan base in the northeast playing close to 100 shows and worship events per year. Regional radio in PA and NY further fueled the buzz by getting behind a number of radio singles and helping them score two consecutive top 5 charting singles in a major CHR market.
Now based in Nashville, Steve is pushing for even higher elevations - having just finished his debut solo EP titled "So Long L.A." With shimmering production by Scott Williamson (FFH, Point of Grace, Lincoln Brewster) this disc is nothing short of a sonic wonder!
To support the release of his new project Steve has already played to thousands in the USA (recently playing GMA's "Seminar in the Rockies" and sharing the stage with legendary performers like Amy Grant and Michael W. Smith) as well as gathering fans internationally in South America, and to a much greater extent in Europe - where he has already headlined two acoustic tours.
Steve is one of those rare figures who seems to effortlessly blur the line between recording artist and worship leader. And he would be the first to say that he is uniquely called to do both. As such, Steve is noticeably excited about the diverse creative outlets being opened to him on the heels of his own debut 'So Long L.A.' ... like the new 2004 Promise Keepers project 'Uprising' featuring his lead vocals on 3 songs - all of which highlight the softer, more intimate side of his style.
