"Under the radar and out of control" -- It's not just another statement - it's a way of life for Spades Alone. Blazing their way through the washed out wasteland that is today's music, their story begins where so many have before - in a basement. Not very original, I'll admit -- but what are four bored kids supposed to do with their time in Oxford, Michigan? As you may have guessed, they turned to music.
Making their way through several bands, Adam and Crystal each had a few songs to bring to the table, but something was missing. Bringing Joey and Jadon in caused a clever, laid-back mix of classic/funk/punk/rock and roll to emerge from that smoke-filled Michigan basement -- all with Crystal's amazing vocal acrobatics soaring beautifully over the top. yet smacking us all in the face at the same time. The songs started to write themselves, and the hooks were simply too big to ignore. After a few months of work (and years of progress,) Fate conspired to drop them in the lap of Frank G. at Schizophrenic Recordings, and together the project began to spring to life. Work began on their debut album, "Ruddy Modes" on a steamy July evening in Detroit. Three hazy months were spent holed up in the studio -- Keeping with their unorthodox approach, fueled by their hard-partying lifestyles, the band recorded the entire album between the hours of 11 PM - 6AM, so they could sneak into the studio and use the large room when no one was looking. Hey, when music wants to be heard, it's just not right to get in the way! Under the radar and out of control.. The resulting disc contains ten diverse tracks, styles seamlessly shifting all over the musical landscape in complete defiance of today's rather corporate musical standards. Each song is a testament to being young, being original, and NOT GIVING A DAMN. Crystal's "heart-on-her-sleeve" lyrics and impassioned vocals -- Adam's unbridled lust for melody and barely restrained need to shred -- the "always there" groove and house-quaking low end of Jadon -- the power, drive, and dynamics that Joey beats out of his drum kit -- These are the faces you'll witness at a Spades Alone show -- That combination of four oddly different souls that somehow manage to compliment and contrast one another in an almost magical (but certainly MUSICAL) fashion. Enjoy...
