Sofia de Medeiros was born in Quebec, Canada, in 1978. Where, already at the age of 7, she discovered herself a passion for music and studied piano and flute. At 11 her parents moved to Vancouver, BC where she already demonstrated an exceptional and innate artistic sense. At the age of 13 her gift in various fields of performing arts, visual arts, and writing (painting, theatre, public speaking,...
At the age of 13 her gift in various fields of performing arts, visual arts, and writing (painting, theatre, public speaking,...) had already won her a scholarship at Art Umbrella, a renowned art school, as well as winning, for three consecutive years, the B.C. Parents for French public speaking award for her excellent writing and performance skills . At the age of 15 she stared in many TV commercials and series.
At the age of 16, Sofia's family moved to Buenos Aires, Argentina where she attended a private French high school. The school did not provide an environment favorable to the arts and so, after two years, and having mastered the Spanish language, she decided to move back to Montreal, Canada.
At the age of 20, while working on her degree in public relations at the Universit? du Qu?bec ? Montr?al (UQAM), she also worked full time as a model and an actress, and was featured in many productions such as the Oscar winning film ?Les invasions barbares?. And hosted in French and English a TV show called ?Career Options/ Choix de Carri?re? . Which aired across Canada and parts of the US. That did not stop Sofia from continuing the vocal training she had started three years earlier.
In 2004, while working in South Africa, Sofia met Antoinette Dejong and formed a duo called ?The Busted Cherries?. A couple of months later, the girls were asked to perform at the ?Montreal sensation Mode? festival in front of three thousand people and received raving reviews. The act's original material, driven by Sofia's tasteful and smart writing earned her considerable attention from local-based producers and promoters.
In 2005 Sofia left the duo, finding it hard to maintain creative freedom within the group.
Two years after the decision to leave ?The Busted Cherries?, Sofia gets back into painting, her childhood creative source, and eventually into songwriting. With this decision, she instantly recovers her proficient creative flow and starts writing her album with the help of her husband Corneille, producer and Motown/Universal recording artist with whom she executive-produced his latest album ?The Birth
of Cornelius?. Of all the art forms, she finds songwriting most fulfilling. ?It is the best and most truthful way for me to incorporate all that I am and share it with others, it truly is blissful!? (Sofia). Sofia wrote the lyrics of all thirteen songs on ?Bliss? and co-composed half of the album, herself. The album draws from Sofia's influences and is an organic blend of pop, jazz, hip-hop, folk, R'nB and Portuguese fado and the result is a unique yet universal sound that naturally falls into one category : sophisticated pop. For her first album ?Bliss? Sofia collaborates with some of the most talented names in the industry. Grammy Award winning sound engineer/producer Russell Elevado (Alicia Keys, Erykah Badu, D'Angelo,?), and world renowned Mastering Engineer Chris Gehringer (Nelly Furtado, Rihanna,?) among others, lent their final touches to the album. When Russel Elevado first heard the rough mixes of a few tracks off of ?Bliss?, he was so impressed by Sofia's strong writing, exceptionally mature, original and sexy vocal performance and sense of melody he insisted on mixing the entire album, right before he had to finish D'Angelo's live Album.
When collaborators on ?Bliss?, as well as industry executives, have commentated on Sofia's musical universe, these comparisons have consistently come up : Sade and Dido. The depth of her voice has been compared to the legendary Joni Mitchell.
In addition to her obvious talent, what is most striking about Sofia, when you meet her, is the instantly captivating and undeniable charisma that characterizes the greatest and timeless stars.
Being of Portuguese-Canadian descent, having traveled across the globe, and speaking 4 languages fluently (French, Portuguese, English and Spanish), Sofia is, at 28, a true woman of the world who will naturally appeal to the widest range of audience.
