Ani Lorak

(born Karolina Myroslavivna Kuiek, Ukrainian: ??????-?? ?????????-??? ????, 27 September 1978, Kitsman, Ukraine) is a Ukrainian pop singer and songwriter She appeared to be a strong front-runner to represent Ukraine at the Eurovision Song Contest on three occasions. Lorak represented Ukraine at the 2008 Eurovision Song Contest with the song Shady Lady and came in 2nd place. She also came second in the ?Press Award Eurovision Song Contest? and won the ?Artistic Award? for her performance.

She appeared to be a strong front-runner to represent Ukraine at the Eurovision Song Contest on three occasions. Born in the small west Ukrainian village ??????? (Kitsman, Chernivtsi region, Ukraine), just north of ????i??i (Chernivtsi), as the daughter of a choir leader (father) and an employee of the administration of cultural affairs and host at a radio station (mother) young ??????-?? (Karolina) soon developed the desire to become a professional singer. She would often participate in singing contests at school, and already at the age of 14 (1992) she took part in the highly acclaimed Pervotsvit competition, where she first met her later producer, Yuri Falesoys. In March 1995 ???????? traveled to Russia, where she participated in a competition of the Moscow TV station ???????? ?????? (?Morning Star'). Due to the fact that another participant with the name ??????-?? (Karolina) was already there it was immediately decided that ??? change her stage name. The solution was to simply read her first name backwards: ??????-?? (Karolina) became ???- ????? (Ani Lorak). After these proceedings ???- moved to Kyiv which offered more possibilities to organize her professional career. Soon she took part in the ?Big Apple Music - 96' competition in New York which gained her fame even beyond the Ukrainian border. At the popular Ukrainian festival ??????????? ???? ?96' she was ticketed ?Discovery of the Year', followed by working on her debut album. She gained two massive chart successes with ??????????? and ???? ???, the latter being the soundtrack title for the film ?????? ?? ??????. By the end of the year the debut ???? ?????? (?I want to fly') hit the market.

In 1997 ???- sang literally in every city of Ukraine and concentrated on completing her second album for which the pre-mastering was done in New York. Also, some video clips for the new songs were produced in California. The Ukrainian audience could see ??? drive along Santa Barbara beaches in a convertible, synchronizing with well-trained male dancers. ? ??????? (?I will return') was finalized in December 1997 and hit the market in early ?98. With new material in her luggage she performed to audiences in France, Germany, Hungary and the US. In 1999 she was rewarded ?Merited artist of Ukraine' (??????????? ???????? ???????) and later the same year she met Russian composer Igor Kruty. ??? and ???? decided to collaborate which resulted in the dance track ??????? (?Mirror') (2000), a next chart entry for ???. Around that time she also agreed to join the advertising campaign of the chocolate brand Korona (a subsidiary of Kraft Foods). The release wwwanilorakcom promoted her own homepage and contains a few new songs, but also the best cuts from the two first albums.

In 2001 the album ???, ?? ?? ? (?There, where you are') was recorded, largely seeing ??? sing in Ukrainian instead of Russian. This long-player not only spawned a few hit clips but also resulted in more very successful live appearances of ??? and an appearance in the Ukrainian/Russian musical film ??????? ?? ?????? ???? ?????????. 2003 saw the release the Remix ???-? ??? ???? which was compiled by remix versions of known tracks (largely from the ???, ?? ?? ? album) but also three brand new cuts. In May that year the audience could see her posing in the FHM magazine, and in August she made several live appearances with American songwriter Pam Reswick in the US.

In early 2004 the album ??? ????? was released, now including the original version of ???-? ??? ???? and two more big hits, ??? ??????? ????? and ??? ???????. Video clips of these tracks were constantly appearing on Ukrainian TV screens. After Ukraine's victory at the European Song Contest in 2004, winner ??????? (Ruslana) publicly advocated that ??? ????? represent the country in the following year. And indeed, in October 2004 ??? appeared with a new song and video clip, A Little Shot of Love, only her second song published sung in english. With ?A Little Shot of Love? ??? participated in the qualification for the 2005 ESC festival, but she only reached the second rank. The band Greenjolly finally won and qualified with their revolution anthem Razom nas bagato - nas ne podolati!. Shortly after this result became known, she published her next clip Smile (again sung in english). It announced her next album, which - with the exception of two ukrainian bonus tracks - was entirely sung in english: Smile. Largely influenced by her cooperation with US producers and songwriters, Pam Reswick and Taryn Murphy, Smile is certainly the most ?international' album of ??i up to this day. The last single clip culled from it in September 2005 was Car Song, a track co-composed by ??i herself. Just when the album was released, the beautiful singer reappeared for a duet with another ukrainian icon, ????????? ?????????? (Oleksandr Ponomarov'), for the tear-jerking ballad 100 kisses, which was followed by ?Karlsong? (for the norwegian children's film ?Karlsong on the Road?). By May 2006, only eight months after Smile was put out, an all-Ukrainian version of it was published, now called ???????… August 2006 brought her singing on a duet with russian singer and producer ??????? ??????? (Valerij Meladze), the romantic ????? ??? ?????? (???? ? ???????? ???????). For a short time in late ?06/early ?07, things cooled down a bit for ??i, which probably had to do with her marriage to turkish Murat Nalcacioglu. However, since April 2007 the clip C ??????? ???????, and since August ? ? ?????, were broadcast. Both tracks were preview songs to the next album, which eventually hit the market in October that year: 15 is an all-russian effort, which was kind of surprising to her fans, assuming that ??i generally targeted at the international market. Indeed, in March her next ?project' was presented: ??i ????? was eventually chosen to represent Ukraine for the 2008 Eurovision Song Contest. For that, since March 2008, her newest song is known to be Shady Lady, an english sung dance/glam rock track which should make quite some waves at that european contest in Belgrade. After an almost fifteen-year career in the music business, ??i ????? can certainly be considered the most professional act coming from Ukraine.

Ani Lorak developed the desire to become a singer as early as at the age of four. At that time, she had already decided what she wanted to achieve in life. Ani Lorak often performed at various school vocal competitions.

In 1992, she took part in the popular contest Pervotsvit [Cowslip] and became the winner. As a result, at the age of 14 she signed her first professional contract.

Ani Lorak became known as Ani Lorak in March 1995. She had to invent her stage name when she was participating in the contest of the Morning Star television program in Moscow. There was another Russian singer with the name Karolina, which is Ani Lorak's real name, already enrolled in the competition, so our Karolina saved the situation having read her name backwards. That's how her present stage name Ani Lorak has come into existence.

The singer moved to Kyiv in 1995. By that time, the name of Ani Lorak became widely known in the Ukrainian show business. At the age of 19 she was awarded with title of the Honoured Artist of Ukraine, having become the youngest singer ever to get this rank. She is the winner of a great number of various prizes, has four Gold Discs according to the results of sales of the albums, winner of prestigious international and Ukrainian festivals and ratings, including the Morning Star television contest (Moscow, 1996), and the Grand Prix winner of the Big Apple Music 96, global competition of young singers in New York.

Ani Lorak has been repeatedly recognised as the Singer of the Year in Ukraine. Her credits include two solo shows on the country's central stage, ten albums, one single, biographical film, and 23 videos. She is the most beautiful and sexy woman of Ukraine according to the results of polls by popular magazines.

Her artistic self-realization goes far beyond singing. Ani Lorak is a brilliant actress. She played Fanchette in the musical film Crazy Day or the Marriage of Figaro, dubbed the Baby in the Norwegian animated film Karlson on the Roof (2006), and later, two characters at once, those of the Kitty and the Little Bee of the Estonian cartoon Lotte from Gadgetville (2007).

Ani Lorak provided support in publishing three books for children, they are How to Become a Star, How to Become a Princess,and How to Become a Culinary Star in 7 Days. The singer is also the producer of her own brand. She owns the Angel-Lounge restaurant in the centre of Kyiv.

Ani is a brilliant poet and composer. She spends a lot of time on charitable activities. In 2004 Ani Lorak has been a UN Goodwill Ambassador on HIV/AIDS in Ukraine. UNICEF and UN in Ukraine have awarded a commendation to Ani Lorak, for assistance and help to HIV positive citizens of Ukraine. In 2005, Ani Lorak was also conferred with the St. Stanislav Order of the 4th degree and the Officer's Cross "for strengthening the international authority of Ukraine, for the high professionalism, great creative achievements, charity and adherence to the ideals of chivalry".

Ani Lorak worthily represents Ukraine on the global music market. She has given performances on the stages of England, the USA, France, Germany, Hungary, Poland, and Turkey. And, she is not going to stop at this. Her immediate plans are to enthrall the European and global audience! And with the musical material making up her repertoire this won't be so difficult to achieve: the high-quality and stylish sound, melodies performed in the best traditions of soul, funk, and pop-rock, as well as the wonderful lyrics. And, at the same time, there is the strong and tender, enchanting and unique voice of Ani Lorak.
