Emerging from the jazz scene of Omaha, Nebraska, Shiver Shiver breaks into the indie-pop world in 2008. The band's debut album, Soulless Sex Appeal, fuses Jordan Elsberry's soulful voice and intricate keys with Chase Thornburg's clean, powerful drumming and rich vocals, creating a setting for the group's darkly cast lyrics. Together as Shiver Shiver, the two weave gorgeous harmonies, generating a record full of catchy and complex ditties. With standout tracks like "Julianna" and "Stop Lying," Shiver Shiver's signature style is rooted in the grandest of glam traditions. Elsberry and Thornburg, founders of Shiver Shiver, recorded with Omaha jazz mainstay UNSHUT when they were 19 and 20 years old (2005). That same year, they also recorded as a duo, "elsberry/thornburg: a nontet." The straight-ahead bebop release, ?new blood,? featured Elsberry's jazz originals, and was recorded at Mile High Music in Denver, Colorado with first-call bassist Mark Simon. Following the recording of ?new blood,? the duo parted ways while Thornburg explored drumming in Chicago and Elsberry concentrated on college. Playing gigs together on school breaks, the two explored new musical terrain and, after Thornburg's relocation to Omaha in June of 2007, began performing as Shiver Shiver. ?It's a privilege to produce the music we've been hoping to create with Shiver Shiver.? Elsberry says. ?Chase (Thornburg) and I have been performing these tunes for some time now, and people have been very receptive and positive. It's a pleasure to have the finished product on our hands. We're very proud of this recording.? Drummer/Vocalist Chase Thornburg adds ?We live in a world where music is divided into simple categories that Shiver Shiver doesn't fit into. Shiver Shiver's sound comes from our background in jazz, yes, but also from our influences in literature and rock. Vladimir Nabokov and David Bowie have as much to do with our music as do Wayne Shorter and Beck. I know it may sound incongruous, but it all fits together like a puzzle.? From the opening thunder of the groove-driven ?Twilight Dreamer? to the Beatles-esque ?Stop Lying,? Shiver Shiver's music is smart, organic, funky and complex. As Marq Manner writes ?It's hard to pigeonhole the two of them since they come from a jazz background and are now playing intelligent pop music with slices of funk, soul, glam, you name it thrown into the mix. The band's literary and cryptic style of lyricism is also hard to pin down at times. This makes their debut album, 'Soulless Sex Appeal,' an interesting listen time and time again.?
