Scallion is the main songwriting and recording project of the Edible Onion label founder and multi-instrumentalist, Darian Scatton. Based in Philadelphia, PA, Scallion is the reason the label began back in 2007, but has been on hold since 2008 while Scatton focused on the label, toured and recorded heavily in other bands including Br'er and The New Heaven and the New Earth. Scallion also tours and their live sets are being performed sometimes with people, and sometimes alone.
Scallion's music is amorphous and hard to pin down, ever-changing and shifting in color and tone at the whims of its creator. The work of a multi-instrumentalist, the recordings are usually comprised of sounds created with whatever instruments happen to be lying around at the time, giving the recordings an odd sense of time and place. The music itself is often highly melodic and pared with songs about loneliness, alienation, and loss of innocence.
Live, Scallion tries to condense the recordings into arrangements that are playable either solo, or by a trio or quartet, but nonetheless, still vary widely in color and scope.
