Ross Mintzer and Mike Thurber met while attending high school at the Interlochen Arts Academy where Ross studied tenor saxophone and Mike studied classical music on acoustic bass. Once moving to New York City to continue their studies at The Manhattan School of Music and Juilliard respectively, Ross began to play guitar and the two started to write songs together. As a result, Remington was created (named after their mentor and friend, Dave Remington). As Remington, the duo (Mike, acoustic bass and vocals/ Ross, acoustic guitar and vocals) performs and composes all original music.
All though they most commonly perform alone, they frequently enjoy collaborating with fellow musicians and music students around the country. Past collaborations have included students from The Juilliard School, Manhattan School of Music, Michigan State University, Interlochen Arts Academy, Willowcreek Middle School, IN, and Mamaroneck High School, NY, as well as many professional artists of their own generation, including Jonathan Batiste, members of the Toledo Symphony, Jennifer Sannon, Party House TV, and The Jefferson Street Variety Show.
Musically, the duo is influenced and inspired by a broad spectrum of sound. Integrating elements of rock and roll, folk, hip-hop, European classical music, and jazz, Remington plays in an original and highly personalized style that at once embraces the rich history of western music and culture that has preceded them and also embodies the spirit of the current generation of Americans. If one where to try and classify Remington's music, it would best be described as American Music, Social Music, or Popular Music.
They have recorded 4 albums of original music over the course of the last 3 years. The first 3 records feature the wonderful Greg Evans as a third member on drum set; however, their most recent release, "Human Music" features only Ross Mintzer and Mike Thurber playing the majority of the instruments heard (saxophone, percussion, bass, guitar, ukulele, piano, and vocals). Several of the tracks also feature a string quartet comprised of students from Michigan State University and professional Toledo, OH area musicians.
With their "Hands of Love" logo as their shield, the bittersweet emotions of daily life as inspiration, and music as their voice, Remington's goal is simple: to make music by people, for people in the hopes of creating and/or deepening a universal common-bond of love, empathy, respect, honesty, and kindness between us all!
