The Quartet of Happiness is a four-piece theatre jazz ensemble based in Boston, Massachusetts. Members include Rick Stone (alto saxophone), Kelly Roberge (tenor saxophone), Kendall Eddy (bass), and Austin McMahon (drums). They incorporate modern jazz with theatric comedy reminiscent of the Blue Man Group to create an entirely unique style all their own. The idea behind the group began when saxophonists Rick Stone and Kelly Roberge were touring in Japan in 2003.
After playing the same set every night for a month, they began to act out by doing things like running off stage into the audience during solos. This gave them the idea of creating their own jazz ensemble dedicated to atypical performances that encourage audience interaction. Since its founding, Quartet of Happiness has performed all across the United States to a variety of audiences.
"Unlike 95 percent of living jazz players, Quartet of Happiness doesn't act like culture stopped evolving in 1959. The Boston-based modern jazz band is like Coltrane's quartet had Coltrane lived to embrace Monty Python, Japanese horror movies and the X-Men (and swapout McCoy Tyner for a second sax)." -The Boston Herald
