1)Phosphene (on the picture) began in 1999 as John Cavanagh's solo project, following four years as half of the duo Electroscope. Since then there have been three full length albums and various shorter releases. Although the first album, Long Meadow Felt Company, was entirely solo, since then John has been increasingly involved in collaborations. John McKeown (1990s/Yummy Fur) was among the guests on Projection, the second Phosphene album and the third was made with saxophonists Lol Coxhill and Raymond MacDonald. A 3"cd called Phoenix Trees has just appeared on Rusted Rail Records of Galway, Ireland and it includes guest appearances from guitarist George Burt and the other half of Electroscope Gayle Brogan. Coming soon: a single featuring Bridget St. John, Isobel Campbell & Bill Wells on one side and Nalle on the reverse.
John Cavanagh is also known for his book on Pink Floyd's The Piper at the Gates of Dawn and for his work as a broadcaster, which has encompassed all sorts of music across the BBC's U.K. networks, BBC Radio Scotland and World Service and he also presents a weekly music show for Radio Six International.
In addition to this, he makes occasional live appearance with friends, like Age of Wire and String (guitarist Neil Davidson & 'cellist Peter Nicholson) and Black Noise (Drew Mulholland and friends). However, most of his music making is channeled towards recording, again working with friends. In the last year that has involved music by Colleen, Pefkin, Family Elan, Age of Wire and String, One Ensemble and Hanna Tuulikki. Cavanagh is now recording the second album by Nalle, collaborative work by Neil Davidson & Japanese artist Toshiyuki Kobiyashi and an album by double bass player Una MacGlone, which also features Neil Davidson and Aileen Campbell.
