Peter Walsh looks and sounds like a classic 60s Folk musician poeticising life in the deep American south. His raw voice ranges from portraying an almost breakable soul to seeming insouciant and untroubled; His guitar croons like a second voice. Peter is a singer/songwriter with the passion of Bob Dylan and the finger picking style of Townes Van Zandt. After listening to his music, you would be forgiven for thinking that the Rhymney River he grew up by is an extension of the Mississippi and his hometown of Cardiff is located somewhere between Georgia and Alabama.
After listening to his music, you would be forgiven for thinking that the Rhymney River he grew up by is an extension of the Mississippi and his hometown of Cardiff is located somewhere between Georgia and Alabama. But even though this Welsh lad lives thousands of kilometres away from the heart of front porch Americana, he embodies the style convincingly. Peter says, ?My dad used to tell me that there was nothing but one small country road running through our village when he was a child and it sometimes still has that country feeling in the air.?
Peter's debut album, Forbidden Road, is the culmination of two years worth of stories, Delta influences, and musical experimentation. He recorded and mixed these songs in a log cabin studio where he had previously immersed himself in the sounds of Townes Van Zandt, Mississippi John Hurt and early Johnny Cash for inspiration. ?I tend to be affected by things that inspire rather than the negative or sad things in life,? says Peter. ?Negative thoughts and feelings do come out in my writing sometimes, but those are from more personal experiences.?
As a child, Peter started taking guitar lessons from a local jazz guitarist. By the time he was 15, he had started writing his own songs, ?but I was a little reluctant to show my songs to anyone until I was a bit older.? After leaving school at 16 and working in a warehouse for a local supermarket for two years where he says ?I hated every minute?, Peter decided to study audio engineering. It was from there that his professional music career took off.
Now, Peter is busy running his own record label, Appaloosa Records, and preparing for a tour of the UK and the US in late 2007. ?I always had a passion for music, from as far back as I can remember,? he says. ?It's something that I've always pursued and focused on.?
