In the West End, he played Che in Evita, Jean Valjean in Les Mis?rables, the Phantom in The Phantom Of The Opera and Stine in City of Angels. He was an accomplished musician, his piano skills were on display in Swell Party - a Cole Porter revue; he also composed scores for several musicals, including King and La Tosca. He died from complications of AIDS at the age of 37, a year after recording a solo album - Martin Smith: A Handful Of Keys.
