Mixing equal parts indie pop rock, alternative country, and singer/songwriter sensiblities; Magnolia Sons has been compared to such acts as Kings of Leon, Whiskeytown, Matchbox Twenty, and the Afghan Whigs. With such a wide range of comparisons, its hard not to be somewhat intrigued by their rather enigmatic sound. The band began as a four piece, hailing from Lake Charles, LA, in late 2004, playing locally in a music scene much to be desired.
The band, made up of William Ferguson (vocals/guitar), James Yarbrough (bass), Austin Aguirre (drums), and Chris Brennan (guitars) began writing original material in early 2005. In mid 2005, the band released a full-length album titled ?An Hour in the Air?. The album was marked by earnest songs about living in a small town, heart break, and loss. The album caught the youthful sound of a band trying to find its niche. In early 2006, the band added Kevin Lambert (keys/guitar) and released an EP, ?Raise your Glass; We're Armed and Jealous?. Made up of songs written after Lake Charles was pummeled by Hurricane Rita, the album marks a departure from their earlier songs and into more mature waters. Since its release in September 2006, 1,500 copies have been sold. The EP is also being aired on 17 radio stations nationwide and 4 internet podcasts; one of which is located overseas. In January of 2007, the band began touring and havent slowed down since. Playing over 200 shows across the south and north east, the band has developed a highly energetic and inviting live show. 2007 was a year of changes for Tuesday's Debut. They changed their name to Magnolia Sons, Darrell Miller took over bass duties, and Chris Brennan departed the band.
The four remaining members released a new EP in August of 2008 called "Jails Everywhere". They recorded with Matt Malpass of Marigolds and Monsters studio in June of 2008. The six songs on "Jails Everywhere" mark a new step in songwriting and textures for the band. Alt country rhythms, slide and pedal steel guitars, and harmonies galore make this a huge step up for the band. Check these guys out in a city near you. You won't be disappointed.
