Lane Steinberg

Lane Steinberg started his career in The Wind, a Miami-based power pop/soul band in the early 80's. With Steve Katz and Steve Burdick, they made three records, 'Where It's At With The Wind', 'Guest Of The Staphs' and 'Living In A New World' before they disbanded in 1987 in the midst of sessions for what would have been their fourth album, 'Desperation Goldberg'. Steinberg then wrote a musical, 'Head's Off', which was workshopped, but never formerly staged. He did production work for the Cheepskates and Shane Faubert during this time under the name Lane Hollend.

In the late 80's Steinberg managed the legendary Water Music Recorders in Hoboken, New Jersey, where he had full run of the studio during its down time and delved eagerly into full 24-track recording, crafting songs with intricately woven vocal and instrumental arrangements. Two songs from these session, 'Life Must Go On' and 'Come Back To Me', were released on the Bus Stop label under the name Wall of Orchids.
Steinberg followed this with an experimental pop album in 1994, 'Peyote Marching Songs' under the name Noel Coward's Ghost. The legendary status of the Bus Stop single led to two Japanese releases for EM Japan, 'The Lane Steinberg Collection 1984-2000' and a Wind greatest hits release featuring many previously unreleased tracks. They also re-released the Bus Stop 45 in its original packaging.
Steinberg concurrently started doing television and performance art work in New York, co-developing the character of Mustafio, an Eastern European connoisseur of both the refined and bizarre. Steinberg recorded five albums of Mustafio monologues and has recently finished a fictional novel based on Mustafio's exploits.
During the early 00's, Steinberg re-teamed with Steve Katz from the Wind (now Steve Barry), to start Tan Sleeve (an acronym for their first names). The first eponymous release was mostly covers of songs from the 30's and 40's, while their second release, 'White Lie Castle', was half originals and half covers, juxtaposing their own songs against those by Lord Kitchener, Frank Zappa, and Becker/Fagan. Both these records were simple acoustic affairs featuring their vocal harmony blend. Their next, 'Bad From Both Sides' was recorded for the reconstituted Bus Stop label, and was a full blown affair featuring full instrumentation with Steinberg handling the drum duties for four songs. Bus Stop also released two EP of Tan Sleeve and Wall Of Orchids, culling songs from previously released records.
Their follow up, "American Blood", was self released, and featured a number of songs with a quasi-humorous bent, such as 'Mr. Combover', 'When Lindsey Buckingham Shaved His Beard', and 'Condoleezza Will Lead Us'. Tan Sleeve are currently recording their fifth release, 'Go Down Swinging'. Original Wind drummer Steve Burdick is featured on the last two Tan Sleeve releases.
Steinberg, ten years after his last CD, also released 'The Return Of Noel Coward's Ghost', featuring twenty songs with a spoken word narrative running throughout. He followed this three years later with 'Passion & Faith', which featured his version of the Grateful Dead's 'Dark Star', as well as four songs written by the Brazilian songwriters, Lo Borges, Milton Nascimento, Beto Gudes, and Tavinho Moura. These are Lane's first recordings in Portuguese.
Steinberg is currently about to release an album by, Cracked Latin, which is a Spanish/English endeavor in collaboration with Luis Accorsi which he describes as "psychedelic cha-cha". Lane also blogs about wine at www.redwinehaiku.com.
