?Eric Clapton has had his territory invaded again, this time by blues guitarist Jim Crouch? The great thing about Liberty is that it's just as much rock as blues-total collaboration, so don't worry about getting depressed. It'll lift ya' - Ben Ohmart - Assistant Editor - Musicdish.com.

?Crouch is a forceful guitar man that has his chops down, and so do his band mates and the various guests that appear on this project?at times he rips off some impressive licks reminiscent of Clapton or Stevie Ray?On the instrumental ?Serenity,? Crouch and his crackerjack band exercise a marvelous display of sharp-as-a-razor six-string dexterity with a tip of the hat to all the great blues-rock players that have come and gone, and they do it beautifully.?

?So Far is enjoyable, hard rock graced with Improvisational power. Crouch establishes the tone of the album, delivering high-energy, Hendrix-style solos over a driving pulse. If you like what you've read so far, check Jim Crouch out? - Guitar Nine Records.

?Crouch can torch an electric guitar a la Stevie Ray Vaughn, but he also knows when to pull back and deliver languid, Santana-like, while-my-guitar-gently-weeps solos, as on the blues instrumentals ?Time and Place? and ?Serenity.? Several songs break from the blues. The wandering-troubadour vibe of Steffen's ?Give ?Til It Hurts? recalls the Band, while the shimmering acoustic guitar of the instrumental ?Debra? is in the vein of Duane Allman's ?Little Martha.?
? James Crouch, "The Only Constant"
VITAL STATS: Local rock and blues guitarist James Crouch was joined by a host of guest musicians for his newest CD, "The Only Constant." The 10-track CD includes five originals and five covers.
THE MUSIC: "Life is bound to rearrange from somewhat normal to strange," Crouch sings with a bulldog-gruff voice on the title track. "The only constant is change." That applies to Crouch's hot-wired six-string, too.
The title track finds him channeling Carlos Santana's sweet guitar tone, while Latin percussion backs up the Carlos vibe. "Roadrunner," a Crouch instrumental, is turbo-charged honky-tonk boogie with some Jeff Beck fury tossed into the mix. "Space Station Blues," another instrumental, is hole-in-my-heart, while-my-guitar-gently-wails blues.
On the cover side, Crouch opens with a mellow surprise: George Gershwin's "Summertime," replete with a Spanish guitar intro. Then Crouch gets down to business by lighting dynamite under Ted Nugent's "Stranglehold" and ZZ Top's "La Grange," right down to the "haw haw haw" on the latter.
And Crouch cranks up Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" with a spot-on, druggy Roger Waters-y vocal and a blistering guitar solo.

Rock guitarist launches fiery instrumentals
Review for Lost Souls
James Crouch, ?Lost Souls?
Perhaps area guitarist James Crouch had good reason to title a song ?Beck in Blue.? Perhaps Crouch knew that if legendary guitarist Jeff Beck ever heard this fire-in-the-hole instrumen? tal, a stunned Mr. Beck would be left gasping for breath and blue in the face. On ?Beck in Blue,? Crouch mixes a modern electric guitar rave-up with just the right dol? lop of traditional boogie ? a worthy tribute to one of his gui? tar heroes. Fans of rock instrumental guitar's holy trinity ? Beck, Steve Vai and Joe Satriani ? likewise will be amazed by that track and the other three works on ?Lost Souls,? Crouch's new CD. ?My Monkey? is devilish blues rock with piano and churchy, soul-saving organ from Dan Walters. The curious? ly titled ?Change the Beatle? sports a doomsday bass progres? sion by Walters behind raspy sax from J.J. Martin and sinewy guitar from Crouch. ?Los Suenos? (Spanish for ?The Dreams?) indeed is a dreamy yet intense, beautiful ballad in a Carlos Santana vein ? with Crouch's electric guitar weeping like a crying angel. The only complaint against ?Lost Souls? is that it leaves rock instrumental aficionados lusting for more.
