Most likely the most "accessible" project Jad Fair will ever be part of, Jad Fair (of Half Japanese) and Yo La Tengo paired up to record an album of twenty two songs in two days (June 21st, 1994, and August 30th, 1996, respectively), resulting in the album, Strange But True (released in 1998). The singing and lyrics were done by Jad Fair (which draw on supermarket tabloids for their themes and titles), while Yo La Tengo jammed music, "headphone-less" (unable to hear and unaware of what Jad Fair was doing until it was all over).
In the years since its release, Yo La Tengo fans have often been turned off by the vocals of Jad Fair and the spoken-word vibe of the record, while many long-time Half Japanese fans have enjoyed it more often than not.
