Geoffrey Mays was born in Japan on May 19th, 1954. He was raised in the Land of the Rising Sun, and has lived abroad in Okinawa, Mexico, Hawaii, France, and in various locations throughout North America. He currently resides in Eugene, Oregon. Geoff sees himself as a citizen of the world, and such a view has brought about great appreciation and understanding of what it means to be human. He has a passion for world peace, unity, and harmony with the nature around us.
This message is conveyed vividly through his music, which he uses as a tool to speak directly to our hearts and our beings, with love from his.
Geoff has been playing and composing music for over 35 years, twenty of which have been spent teaching. He got his start in music rather late (in college) but soon took to it. In 1978, he was coaxed onto his first stage in Poitiers, France. Since that time, Geoff has had a long and vibrant love affair with his guitars, forming several musical groups that span many years and many countries (which include Switzerland, Germany, France, Australia, and the United States).
In 1993, he made the commitment to being a full-time musician. Geoff engaged in an 18-month apprenticeship with Don Latarski. The group played gigs at The Oregon Electric Station every weekend, completed three Eugene Celebration performances as a group, as well as many other festivals in the area.
Geoff is currently playing with two bands: Vega and Spin One-Half. You can see Vega performing around Eugene at clubs like Joe Fed's throughout the year. They are a jazz-rock fusion group, consisting of many talents creating an intergalactic groovy sound. Spin One-Half is a rock n' roll garage type band, playing originals with some covers thrown in for good measure.
Geoff has been working on an instructional guitar book entitled ?Simple & Deep: A Zen Approach to Playing with Your Guitar?. No release date has been set.
