Gently Scar'd is an acoustic pop/rock band fronted by the alluring Carice Goossens. Carice began her career in music in 2005 as a sideline to her burgeoning career as a medical doctor. Carice started composing songs and performing solo gigs but soon decided that she needed a full time band to perform with. After auditioning various musicians, Carice eventually decided on Jacques Cronje, Jason Phillips and Peter Verheijen in the roles of drummer, bassist and lead guitarist respectively. By November 2005 the band was complete and ready start gigging.
The music fluctuates between soft & lyrical and edgy & ruthless. Carice, who pens most of the songs, is inspired by everyday life. She writes songs about personal relationships, chance encounters with inspirational people and issues that are close to her heart. Being a medical student, Carice meets many people struggling with disease and disability and allows these people to inspire some of her music. Two examples of this can be heard in the tracks ?Hush? and ?Broken Silence? which are respectively about a cancer patient and a deaf little girl. The despair in the following lyrics from ?Hush? illustrate the sincerity in Carice's songwriting ? ?For others a day goes by so normally/For you it's something you hold onto eternally?. It's quite incredible though how quickly the mood changes with songs such as ?4give Me As I Hate You? and ?Criticize Me?.
Gently Scar'd's debut album was produced by the legendary South African producer, Dave Birch, who has also produced bands such as Perez, Sunways, Finkelstiens, The Parlotones and Love Jones amongst others. He was also the front man for 90s South African Rock cornerstone band Squeal. Birch has added a new dimension to the music and has taken the band to the next level in their creativeness which has influenced their increasingly popular live performance.
In 2006 Gently Scar'd took to the road with acclaimed South African Blues guitarist Dan Patlansky. The pack of musicians performed at various venues through KwaZulu-Natal to very enthused fans and was very well received on the tour. They performed at 2006 Lusito Land festival and were invited back to perform during two slots at the 2007 festival. They have also shared the stage with Prime Circle, The Parlotones, Fahrenheit, Adrian Shannon, Garth Taylor and been invited on numerous occasions to both open and close for Arno Carstens' New Porn.
