Five Foot NIne formed in Chicago in the spring/summer of 2006. The members include frontman/songwriter Michael Hushel as well as Chicago scene vets Jason Batchko (Caviar) and bassist Tom Szidon. The band shows influences from such stalwarts as Chameleons and mid-period Jam, as well as more recent acts like Broken West and Teenage Fanclub. FIve Foot NIne Gets its distinctive sound from the vocal harmonies of Hushel and female co vocalist Laura Coleman, as well as the multiple instrumentalists who played on the Jan 2007 LP.
The song "Back To THe Tunnels" first brought attention to the band, followed by the female lead vocal number "I Was In Pictures." The band was produced by former Webb Brother Neal Ostrovsky. Sound is very uptempo melodic pop, best described as "Cat Stevens on an all-night caffeine fix."
