EP Island is a home-studio-based songwriting and recording project from Vancouver BC, executed over intensive periods. We wanted to work together musically, but without the usual format of a band with weekly practices. EP Island offered the option of an intense and focused creative process that produced immediate results. Our first go was carried out during a full weekend in February 2008. We set a goal of writing and recording two songs (and managed three) over a three-day period.
We holed up in LL's house, which she had considerably tricked out with mics, cables, gear and, of course, her recording command station. The First Night we spent jamming and structuring song ideas. Day Two was devoted to arranging, refining and practicing the two songs we ultimately wrote, and for good measure we felt it prudent to have a math rock song so we wrote a third. Day Three was pure recording and a very early run of mixing ideas.
Over the weekend we also cooked and ate good food, and sat on the front steps during our short breaks. The weather outside was lovely and sunny, though we mostly remained indoors.
LL continues to write and perform her solo project down the lees, and to work on Project Ahead, a side project with members of the Wintermitts. She has been a member of several previous bands, including New Years Resolution, Skinjobs, Queazy and Singleseven. She can sing and play every instrument you can think of.
Mel is a drummer who no longer wants to be in a band but loves the EP Island experience. She has previously played in New Years Resolution, Trail vs Russia and Anglocanadien.
