In the tradition of fiercely independent artists like Ani DiFranco and Jonatha Brooke, 27-year-old singer/songwriter Emily Asen is her own creative engine. Surrounded by her loving family of instruments and pets, Emily writes, performs, records, and produces tightly crafted folk-pop music from her home studio in Fairfield, CT, infusing each song with her innate curiosity and unshakeable sincerity.
Emily distills her various creative influences?which include Imogen Heap, the painter Edward Hopper, and her classical cello training?into a sound and style that defies categorization. Her atmospheric arrangements interlaced with intricate acoustic guitar and incisive lyrics form a soul-bearing, pulse-driving sound that pushes the boundaries of conventional folk.
Emily's full-length debut Proof LP (2008) was the first edition of Emily's self-produced and self-performed repertoire. The album was spotlighted in local and industry press including Fairfield County Weekly, Taconic Press, Indie Music Review, WomenFolk.net, and Myxer.com and was named one of the top 25 albums of 2008 by IndieMusic.com. During the week of its release, Proof LP was featured on the front page of iTunes and in Amazon's New and Noteworthy section. The album received airplay on over 150 college stations nationwide and was licensed to MTV's The Hills, The Real World, My Super Sweet Sixteen, Oxygen's Bad Girls Club, and TruTV's Ski Patrol.
Prior to releasing Proof LP, Emily recorded a series of EPs. In 2007, she received Top Ten Honors from the Australian Songwriting Contest in the International Category for her song ?Avalanche? off of Avalanche EP.
Emily's second full-length album, To The Marrow, was released in October 2010. Recorded and produced by Emily over a two-year period, To The Marrow is an intimate investigation of identity and the next chapter of her contemporary folk story.
