There's a flow that exists within the universe of certain artists. You think of them and their gifts appear effortless, as if it makes up a large portion of their being; like water. Consistently pushing the margins of spoken word since his acclaimed 2005 release, The Love Life EP, Em Sea Water remains a prominent poet. His sophomore album, Hydrology, earned him ?Album of The Year? at the 2007 Peo...ple's Poetry Awards.
Then, in 2008, Water stepped in front of the camera, partnering with Grasshopper Philms for his breakthrough music video, "The Box Theory." Another exciting moment for Water was accepting an invitation to perform at the 2010 Visionary Arts Awards in recognition of individuals including Geoffery Canada and his Harlem Children Zone.
Later that year, Em Sea Water ended a short hiatus from the studio by releasing a new recording of jazz, soul, poetry, and hip hop called, Nostalgia. This project confirmed him as a balanced emcee and literary artist featuring lyrically eye-opening songs like "Successfull" and "My Bible." Water then found ways to use his music for more than just entertainment, inspiring students with ?My Pencil? music video that quickly went viral on YouTube, a parody of Wiz Khalifa's "Black & Yellow" with lyrics changed to motivational words for children. It appeared in almost every classroom in Maryland. While touring in Pennsylvania, Water met folk singer Nicole Zell who became a friend and musical comrade. They recorded a collaboration called The Whoopies EP, released in May 2011.
Earning the name "Water" from his natural ability to reflect his surroundings much like the ocean naturally reflects the sun. His poetry is openly personal, as his thoughts are often transparent; like water. Also recognizing his art as a gift from God, much like the gift of life is compared to water in John 4. He gives his gift back by using his poetry and life experience to positively mentor and educate youth as a Teacher and Family Advocate for inner city residents. A graduate of Coppin State University and active member of Poetry for The People Baltimore, the city continues to function as his muse for creating art. A multifaceted channel that absorbs the images of his culture, Em Sea Water remains one of the most versatile writers of his generation. Staying based in his hometown of Baltimore, Water reaches a wide audience including New York, North Carolina, Virginia, DC, Atlanta and other cities. He is currently in the studio completing a fourth solo album and awaiting the release of first poetry book in October 2011. For more information about Em Sea Water, visit www.facebook.com/emseawater.
