Drop Black Sky interweave deeply textured harmonies and rhythms with powerful and evocative vocals. They use a broad spectrum of sounds and instrumentation including effects-laden guitars, field recordings, digital programming, piano, and er hu (Chinese violin). Drop Black Sky's sound has been compared to Dead Can Dance, Boards of Canada, Cocteau Twins, and Tool. The band was featured in a performance of San Francisco's best avant-garde music.

The band was featured in a performance of San Francisco's best avant-garde music. They were also chosen as a supporting act for both Collide and Black Tape for a Blue Girl. Drop Black Sky's performance of the classic Chinese lovesong Kangding Qing Ge aired on Beijing television in March 2006. In July 2006, they were invited to perform for the Labyrinth of Jareth Fantasy Masquerade at the Henry Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles.
The band has provided original scores for several independent filmmakers and a Chinese television show.
Drop Black Sky completed a self-produced EP entitled Ring Pass Not in January 2006.
