Bio / Background
New York City songwriter Ward White creates vivid musical short stories that refuse to be pigeonholed. Residing somewhere in the scrubland between Ray Davies and Wilco, Ward's lyrical imagery celebrates doomed relationships, broken promises, and everything else that makes life worth living.
Ward's latest EP, Lovely Invalids, shows an artist "at the peak of his lyrical powers" (Alan Young, Trifecta Newsletter), deftly showcasing the talents of his crack backing band, featuring Aaron Keane (bass) & Noah Simon (drums). Ward began his collaboration with musician /producers Keane & Simon during an educational but unfulfilling stint in the employ of artist management firm AGF Entertainment (Shawn Colvin, Suzanne Vega), where the trio produced two projects: a 1998 EP, Artificial Light, and the full length Medicine in 2000.
↓ more ↓After honing their production chops at AGF's Shelter Island Sound, Keane and Simon went on to helm the console at NYC's Jarvis Productions for artists ranging from U2 to Jesse Malin to Grammy winning songwriter Jesse Harris.
Over the last five years Ward has developed his live act on the East Village circuit, with regular shows at the likes of Luna Lounge, Arlene Grocery and CB's Gallery. During that time he has had the pleasure of sharing stages with Dan Bern, Scout, Daniel Johnston, Clem Snide, Patti Rothberg and countless others.
The songs that make up Lovely Invalids are short, direct and concise -- no ambient noodling or lo-fi wankery here -- just lyrics imbued with a distinct literary sensibility, bolstered by the easy push and pull of a band in its prime.
Challenging the notion of the 3-minute pop song as a vehicle for cliché, Ward White invites the listener to actually listen.
