Rock and Power Pop with Alternative Roots and New Wave.
Editorial review
The self-titled debut album by Seattle indie trio Turners Corner owes a little more than geography with fellow Washingtonians Minus the Bear. Although guitarist/keyboardist Todd Maloy doesn't share the other band's fascination with speedy neck-tapping guitar solos, his songs are similarly odd amalgamations of indie pop hooks, post-rock noodling, and obscure, oblique lyrics. For example, opening track "Balloon Ride" is a catchy guitar-and-synth tune that sounds not unlike a slightly more experimental version of the Shins, but it's underlaid with bits of distorted walkie-talkie speech with little obvious relation to the rest of the song. Like that song, the entire album skates right on the edge of being annoyingly precious and clever-clever. However, Maloy has an appealing singing voice that forsakes the needling whininess of so many of his indie rock brethren, and although some of the songs have an annoying tendency to wander about for 45 to 60 seconds too long near the end, he writes some good melodies. Turners Corner are the sort of band who, once they get all of the artsy stuff out of their system, could make a really good, brainy pop album along the lines of the Loud Family. This album isn't there yet, but it bodes well for future development. ~ Stewart Mason, All Music Guide
Bio / Background
Turners Corner BIO:
From what I gather, Turners Corner are three nice boys from the isolated streets of Woodinville WA. Feeling it was time to leave the handy mart parking lot to pursue bigger dreams, they moved on to the much larger city of Seattle.
Fronted by the singer/song writer emotional stylings of Todd Maloy, his alternative roots keep him grounded in progressive chords and subtle changes (he will continue to work on breaking out of this pattern).
Zebulon, the bass player draws his talents from various power trios (from the north but not Triumph) and is driven by the classic lines of such influential players as Jaco Pastorius and Chris Squire (Zeb has always been a Yes man).
Stroking the skins is Brian D. (The 'D' is for Drum Dysfunction) He combines straight beats with conflictory apposing thumb type rhythms and is influenced by such greats as Ginger Baker and Karen Carpenter.
↓ more ↓If Stewart Copeland had studied under him, he would have perfected the "hitting the high-hat with both sticks fast" thing.
Together, they achieve a sound not recognizable except under the most un-supervised conditions. They are attempting (in their own heroic way), to combine many different musical styles while maintaining a level of vascular accessibility ... and then they add keyboards.
Debut Album BIO:
What do you get when you put three guys in a basement studio for nine months? I don't know but my ass is sure sore, and we have a new record that we really like. It's kind of like we've been pregnant, and are finally going to give birth and you get to see it. First you might say "what a pretty baby and that it is tall for its age". Then you may go tell your friends that it's hairy and cries a lot. Or maybe you won't... We don't cry in front of people so much, except Todd. Zeb is really the only one that is pretty hairy and Brian has no hair at all.
Making this record has been a vast creative, introspective, and technical process with plenty of insecurities battling our confidence. This has been a fabulous learning experience that we look forward to doing again and again.
