Biography for

Tsuyoshi Niwa (soprano saxophonist)

Born in Tokyo, Japan. Grew up partially in Mexico City. After coming back to Tokyo at age 15, he started to play the alto saxophone. Four years later, he picked up the soprano sax as well.

After college graduation, Tsuyoshi moved to New York and began studying with mentors like George Garzone (sax), Phil Markowitz (piano), Reggie Workman (bass) and Dave Liebman (sax). He concentrates on the soprano around this time.

In 1997, the first independent album "Sequence X" was produced by Phil Markowitz and himself. The CD instantly gained media's attention and won commending reviews.

Tsuyoshi left the music college in 1998, but kept on his innovation and performed at NY venues like Knitting Factory and Kavehaz. In 2000, The second independent album was released.
