Garikayi is Music. He speaks it and breathes it, he follows it, catches it, wears it, eats it, and drinks it. Garikayi is an Mbira creator; a woodcarver, carpenter, metal worker & a master musician. He is inventive with the Mbira.
Editorial review
Some people forge unique connections with their instruments. Zimbabwe's Garikayi Tirikoti is one of them. His main instrument is the mbira, or thumb piano, of his native Shona people. Not only does he play it superbly, he's also a craftsman who builds them, and a composer, writing for them (his talents as a musician also extended to hosho and ngoma), and as a singer. The seven tracks on Maidei illustrate just how good he is. There's an resonant richness to his mbira playing, as lines build over lines, creating layers of cascading melodies. The forms of the songs will seem fairly familiar to Western ears, with verses and choruses, understated rhythmic accompaniment, and vocals that slide gorgeous over the ear (Tirikoti's nephew Lee helps out on backing vocals). You won't understand a word of the Shona lyrics, but the booklet contains good translations and explanations, although it really isn't that important -- enjoy the music for what it is. "Chavechinyakare," for example, offers an homage to traditional music that's as catchy as any pop song and shows the possibility of the mbira as an instrument outside out usual spiritual role. But throughout this album Tirikoti brings the mbira into unusual places, developing its sound in a way few players have. He uses its hypnotic qualities to great effect on the opener, "Usaore Moyo," but elsewhere he emphasizes its textures and tones, and the way he uses it in the writing of full songs. A remarkable record, especially for anyone who'd dismissed the mbira as just another ethnic instrument. ~ Chris Nickson, All Music Guide

One hot evening in Dar es Salaam, our lives were suddenly changed. Sitting on the floor with his back to the wall was a man. He is strong in every way, that was certain form afar.
He was singing softly, eyes front and very distant. But his fingers - if only you could see them - were moving everything with the Mbira. His dexterity is astounding, the velocity equally impressive. You will not see his fingers for hours on end, only a flesh colored blur against the shining metal keys.
Garikayi has created new Mbira tuning's which have come to him in dreams. These new instruments allow him to play all traditional tunings in unison, creating an Mbira Orchestra.
His virtuosity on every instrument makes him an mbira force, an endless surging river of Mbira urging all people to remember their ancestor's wisdoms, and not to throw them away.
Garikayi is also renowned the world over for the Mbira he builds.
↓ more ↓In 2001 this mbira master, Garikayi Tirikoti, decided to record his music in our studio, in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. He also gave us permission to show his music and great talents to as many people as possible.
Garikayi Tirikoti is an mbira revolutionary, intensifying the experience and sound of mbira music. Fill your sails with Mbira music, the gentle mbira force, Garikayi Tirikoti.
