Dolly Parton meets RUSH. STEPHANIE ST.JOHN is a chick that pulls at your heart, backed by a band of Davids (they're all named David) who all love RUSH. Who says girls don't like RUSH? This one does. Recorded to analog 2" tape - smokey and fullllll. ALL
Bio / Background
Cinderella's Dead is a collection of Stephanie St.John's songs backed her Band of Davids (all of them are named David).
Chuck Eddy from the Village Voice says about Cinderella's Dead, "Fuller post-goth vibrato than the Lilith norm; more guitar, too, sometimes approximating a Saudi Arabian lilt. And funner words: One song climaxes on a chant about poking holes into "the Tupperware sky," and another is called "Beaver Dam," heh heh..."
Rounding out the ten-track opus are the mellow "Meaning," the Robert-Smith-meets-Robert-Plant "Splitting Hairs," the cherubic "Baby Blue Charade" and "Brown," an anthem co-written by guitarist Lin Esser when he and Stephanie were in the trip hop band V-Disc.
In addition to Stephanie's acoustic guitar and effortless vocals, the album features the scintillating bass grooves of David Wilson and David Silva's righteous drum work. The three-piece band is beautifully complemented by Esser's otherwordly guitar licks.
↓ more ↓They're all rabid RUSH fans and when the Davids are being good Stephanie lets them cover Red Barchetta.
There is tremendous stylistic range on the album. "Over It" bridges the cap between rock and jazz, and "Baby Blue Charade" would not sound out of place on a Georgian country radio station. "Meaning" is so soft you can hear her fingers move along the neck of the guitar. And for old school in-your-face rock 'n' roll, "Brown" brings down the house. Many compare this track to RUSH's "Fly By Night"
Cinderella's Dead was recorded by Brad Newsom at Planet of Sound in Wilmington, Delaware. Produced by Stephanie, the album was mixed by Yianni Papadopoulos at The Track Factory in Astoria, New York, and mastered by Craig Randall at Brass Giraffe, in New York City.
A veteran of the New York music scene, STEPHANIE ST. JOHN performs regularly with The Band of Davids -- drummer David Silva, bassist David Wilson adn guitarist Michael David Preston-- at NYC clubs like Brownies, The C-Note, Arlene's Grocery, Sidewalk Cafe, CB's Gallery adn Le Bar Bat.
Stephanie began her career as a solo act. She later became the lead singer for the alternative trip rock band VDisc. Her songs include "Cab Driver," featured in the indie film 30 Days. She also composes music for the nationally syndicated radio show "Secrets of Health and Longevity." She and the boys are now MiMi Ferocious - http://www.MiMiFerocious.com to see what all the fuss is about.
A recent review from Collected Sounds of CINDERELLA'S DEAD:
Stephanie St.John's debut album is a compelling listen. She has a fine voice and a versatile pop/rock sound.
"Mecca" is a great song with witty lyrics and a catchy chorus. "Beaver Dam" stands out too with the line "Cinderella's dead and the prince is gay" and some quirky vocal delivery.
"Over It" has the protagonist saying to a lover "I'm the comfy pair of shoes you couldn't afford to lose". St.John is good at finding unusual phrases like that and it makes for some good lyrics.
"Cinderella's Dead" is a very convincing debut.
