Brilliance of the Kinks mated with the beautiful insanity of Syd Barrett. The raw, garage sounds of the‘60s and‘70s. Choruses that croon like Damon Albarn in a Blur that might have shared a San Fransisco stage with Janis Joplin.
Bio / Background
Sir Splendid is a band from San Diego, CA. Sir Splendid is now a trio but when they recorded Lords & Peacocks it was just two. Marcus B wrote all the songs and played all instruments. Paul C played the drums. They recorded the album on their own.
Marcus B was primarily a turntablist/club dj in the 90’s. He created classic underground mix-tapes such as Scatterbrain, Superior Cynic, Sunshine Ambassador, Gone with the Spin and many more. He had much success in this arena yet he was never artistically satisfied spinning others music. Plus his true musical love had always been rock music from the 60’s and 70’s. After a brush with death due to illness he promised himself that he would pick up a guitar and join a band, something he hadn’t done since he was 10 years of age. He answered an ad in the SD Reader “Starting Band, need guitarist”. He had just bought a Fender Stratocaster the month before and hadn't played guitar since he was in 6th grade.
↓ more ↓When trying out he realized how elementary his playing was and that he was not ready. He was asked to play bass instead and gladly did. The next day a drummer tried out for the band and was asked to join, that was Paul C. The band practiced furiously, yet only played two shows and never released any material. The band split and Marcus went back to being a DJ.
He once again had great success for an underground DJ that wasn’t necessarily trying to be successful, producing music for skateboarding videos, commercials, guest DJ at the International Skateboard awards, gigs around the states, up and down California and at home in San Diego he was booked always and often. During this time he met a promoter in SD named Gage that wanted to put together a band with Marcus on the turntables. In previous months Gage booked Marcus to play a slew of shows in San Diego and San Francisco with key tickling maniac Todd Davidson. They as a duo were called ‘Marcus B vs. The Man on the Moog’. Marcus on the 1200’s, Todd on the Moog Prodigy and vocoder. The promoter eventually wanted this to expand and had the idea of bringing in more musicians. Marcus agreed to play but wanted to play guitar as well, the promoter said ok. Marcus suggested Paul C join as the drummer. The band was put together and for two gigs was called Guest Starr. The band decided to carry on and renamed the project Square Circle. They were signed to a local indie label very quickly. The great artist Dave Kinsey, a friend of Marcus, was asked to design the branding of the band. The first album Say Hello to Square Circle was released about a year later, April 2001. Now the band was playing in LA and in SD quite often. Due to the heavy rehearsal and show schedule Marcus pushed aside DJing.
In about two years time bass player Stickman3X left the band due to musical differences. Marcus was also disappointed with the musical direction and eventually Marcus jumped ship as well. Paul C trucked on with keyboardist Todd Davidson. Marcus ended up not Djing and not playing in a band, he basically disappeared from both scenes for a few years.
Marcus started writing more songs and recording at home. He eventually became inspired to record again and asked Paul C to play the drums. Paul was still in Square Circle and once in a while would ask Marcus to play a show, or to lay down some scratching on a few tracks for the second Square Circle album Mankind. So, Marcus asked Paul to return the favor by playing drums for his new project Sir Splendid. Paul was glad to help, and not to long after Square Circle fell apart.
So, Marcus and Paul were back together again and have since enlisted the help of bassist Christian Schinelli. Schinelli is mainly known for his skilled playing in funk-jazz outfits Pocket and The Price of Dope. Schinelli played briefly in Square Circle and It’s during that time he and Marcus met.
Sir Splendid has a new album coming out this year titled Sinister Purpose. They have also started writing the third album as well.
