"Stadium rock hooks with indie rock originality." CDBABY SAYS: "a daydream for your ears ... modern rock is alive and well, just listen."
Bio / Background
RELEASE:
The new rock trio Shapes of Race Cars is leading a brugeoning new, song-based indie rock scene in Silverlake CA's. They've become rapid faves with with a fresh, hook-laden live rock set and an acclaimed debut ep, "Apocalypse Hurts." While the trio's live show has won them L.A. fans, "Apocalypse Hurts" is winning them radio play, praise and fans as far away as Estonia.
This summer the band hits the road on their first tour of the Western U.S.
The Shapes of Race Cars sound is a striking combination of garage rock edge and radio-ready melodies. It echoes everything from The Dead Boys and In Utero-era Nirvana, to Guided By Voices and Cheap Trick.
"Apocalypse Hurts" represents a low-fi collection of various self-produced apartment and pool house recordings as well as one full-studio track - "Captain," (recorded at El Dorado studios by Dave Jerden's son, Brian Jerden).
↓ more ↓Shapes of Race Cars is fronted by Dylan Callaghan, who formed the trio after dissolving his first rock band, Champion. Callaghan is the band's primary songwriter. His arching vocal melodies deliciously raw guitar combine with the punkishly counter-melodic bass play of Dale Zyla and the dynamic, physically wrenching drumming of Josh Grolemund.
EARLY PRAISE FOR "APOCALYPSE HURTS":
"This is an exceptional rock and roll ep ... big beautiful melodies over raw, buzz-saw guitars and pummelingly danceable drums. It's modern, it's smart and it rocks!!!"
- Ken Lane, Tabloid.net
" ... I went there to see some chick punk band that's supposed to be buzz-worthy and when I walked in, this three piece was on stage that literally froze me in my tracks. The voice, the melodies, the snarling ocean of tube-amp distortion, the sweat, the joy. This was Shapes of Race Cars! This is the band I've been longing for. I at least thank the girl-punkers for helping me discover them."
- Frank Parshall, The Rock N' Roll Press
"Blast this song ("Captain") from your car with the top down all summer long ... This here is a big, bashing dollop of tuneful, hard-driving, summer-anthem energy."
- Fingertips Music
