Ron Rutherford is a man whose life has been built around music.
He fondly recalls bouncing on the back seat of his Father’s Chevy Bel Air to The Beatles singing “I Want To Hold Your Hand” on the radio.
“It was a typically beautiful Dallas, Texas day,” he says, “blue skies and fair weather cumulus clouds out the windshield as we sped down the highway.” It proved to be a seminal ride. He has been inspired by and passionate about music ever since.
Ron played piano and violin as a kid in Texas. Moving to New York City as a young man, he took up guitar and harmonica.
↓ more ↓While living in New York, he played and sang around Manhattan and the Northeast; did some television and jingle work; was written up in the New York Times for his performances with The Rutherford & Steward Band; and wrote and performed briefly with legendary rock pianist Nicky Hopkins.
Ron Rutherford’s musical influences are eclectic. He cites Classic Rock bands and Singer/Songwriters such as Crosby Stills & Nash, Neil Young, The Eagles, Don Henley, Jackson Brown, Elton John, James Taylor, Simon & Garfunkel, Dan Fogelberg, America, Seals & Crofts, Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band, Donovan, Cat Stevens, Van Morrison, Don McLean, Jim Croce, Harry Chapin, Rodney Crowell, Buddy Holly, The Everly Brothers, Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley, The Beatles, The Who, Led Zeppelin, Yes, Pink Floyd, Genesis, The Moody Blues, King Crimson, Procol Harum, The Beach Boys, The Dave Clark 5, Paul Revere & The Raiders, The Zombies, Herman's Hermits, The Turtles, The Lovin' Spoonful, The Mamas & The Papas, The Hollies, Gary Puckett & The Union Gap, The Rascals, The Kinks, The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, Bob Dylan, The Animals, Emerson Lake & Palmer, Jethro Tull, Queen, Deep Purple, The Rolling Stones, Renaissance, Electric Light Orchestra, The Guess Who, The Band, The Doors, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Robin Trower, Steppenwolf, Canned Heat, Iron Butterfly, Loggins & Messina, Billy Joel, Pure Prairie League, Poco, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Jefferson Airplane/Starship, The Grateful Dead, Mott The Hoople, Aerosmith, Cream, Eric Clapton, Derek & The Dominos, Jeff Beck, Humble Pie, Ten Years After, Mountain, The Allman Brothers Band, Lynard Skynyrd, The Marshal Tucker Band, The Charlie Daniels Band, Journey, Pat Benatar, Red Rider, Boz Scaggs, Bruce Springsteen, Rod Stewart, Peter Frampton, Blind Faith, Traffic, Steve Winwood, Savoy Brown, AC/DC, David Bowie, Alice Cooper, Bad Company, The Steve Miller Band, Little Feat, Spirit, Jimi Hendrix, Santana, Grand Funk Railroad, Chicago, Blood Sweat & Tears, Joe Cocker, The James Gang, Joe Walsh, The Doobie Brothers, Boston, The J. Geils Band, Bachman-Turner Overdrive, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, The Cars, Heart, Fleetwood Mac, Foreigner, ZZ Top, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Van Halen, Elvis Costello, Nick Lowe, Dave Edmunds, Rockpile, Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins, Mike & The Mechanics, Toto, The Smithereens, Bruce Hornsby, Gerry Rafferty, Christopher Cross, Joe Jackson, Sheryl Crow, Nils Lofgren, Ian Cussick, Dire Straits, Leon Russell, The Alan Parsons Project, Uriah Heep, The Police, Sting, Def Leppard, Bryan Adams, John Cougar Mellencamp, Hall & Oates, Squeeze, Bonnie Raitt, Johnny Winter, The Edgar Winter Group, Rick Derringer, Tina Turner, Sly & The Family Stone, Earth Wind & Fire, Stevie Wonder, Dan Hicks & The Hot Licks, Kinky Friedman, Warren Zevon, Steely Dan, Frank Zappa, (plus the Jazz Rock Fusion of Chick Corea's Return To Forever, the poetry of Robert Frost, the drawings of M.C. Escher, and too many more to mention) and always Hank Williams, as inspirations.
Although growing up listening to and loving Rock and Roll on the radio and records, he had country music in his ears wherever he went, just from living in Texas – and both had a profound impact on him.
Ron Rutherford’s music is something familiar you’ve never heard before – stories of love, loss, insight, and inspiration. Picture a full moon over a long lost trail and a lone wolf that beckons the listener to follow to the end.
Ron Rutherford’s new album, Lone Wolf, ends too soon.
