Old time Gospel meets swing, R&B, Gospel Quartet, Contempoary Gospel and even a little holy hip hop on this Debut Gospel Album by Rev. Prentiss Lewis, which can only be described as "you've got to hear it to believe it."
Bio / Background
Pastor Prentiss E. Lewis is a native of Grambling, Louisiana. As a young man, he was inspired musically by his father, the late L.C. Lewis, who was a popular gospel quartet singer. His father saw his musical potential and began developing & grooming him to sing gospel music. Pastor Lewis began singing publicly at the age of 5.
Starting at age 13, Prentiss became lead singer several for R&B groups. He attended Grambling High School and at age 15 competed in the Tri-State High School Vocal Competition winning “Tri-State Vocalist of the Year". In 1973, he signed an R&B recording contract for True-Soul Records of Little Rock, Arkansas. When asked about his R&B singing career, Prentiss simply states that his life did not begin until he accepted Christ as his personal Savior. So if we were going to discuss his life, we would have to start there...and so we shall.
Prentiss Lewis is first and foremost a preacher, a preacher who has been gifted with the voice of song.
↓ more ↓His father dubbed him "The Songster". A singer sings. A Songster interprets the song and makes it his own. Prentiss Lewis is a Songster who on the heels of receiving an R&B recording contract, was called of God to Preach the Gospel. He accepted the calling and turned down the contract. He continued to sing but his focus was learning and growing in the knowledge of this God whom he now served with his whole heart. In 1991 he was called to Pastor the Greater Starlight Missionary Baptist Church in Los Angeles, California. In the wake of this he was offered another recording contract, this time on a gospel label. This contract he turned down as well because the terms would have required too much time away from the flock that God had given him to Pastor. Still blessed with the talent to sing and the anointing of God to bless others with his talent, recording contract or not, he sang.
In 2004 Prentiss was in his 12th year as Pastor of Greater Starlight and had additional responsibilities including serving as 1st Vice-President of the Progressive Baptist State Convention of California, yet he still planned to "one day" make an album. Still discussing it and planning for it as a "one day soon" project, in June of 2004, he went to the hospital not feeling well and found out that "his not feeling well" was the result of having had three heart attacks. What he thought would be a few minutes in an emergency room became a triple bypass surgery, three weeks of hospitalization and a long recovery.
Prayers were sent up all over the country. God answered those prayers and allowed Rev. Lewis to have what doctors characterized as a miraculous recovery. He was able to return to the pulpit in two months. Two months after that he began working on his debut CD, "SONGS IN THE KEY OF SALVATION".
"SONGS IN THE KEY OF SALVATION" is a unique collection of praise and worship songs expressed in various gospel styles including traditional, blues, urban contemporary, praise & worship, standard contemporary and even a little "old school" holy hip hop. The very first word you will hear is "Jesus"; the last phrase, "Praise Your Name". That just about sums up this album, a unique collection of hand raising, toe tapping, hand clapping, thigh patting praise and worship songs that you'll want to listen to over and over again.
This CD was a long time coming and is the exclamation point on a gospel teaching/preaching/evangelistic and music ministry to which Rev. Lewis has devoted nearly half of his life. And yet, this is just the beginning as God has appointed this time for Rev. Lewis to touch the world with his music ministry.
So prepare yourself for praise and worship Prentiss Lewis style as "The Songster" shares this collection of gospel songs and hymns with you, all wrapped up in bow that he calls, "SONGS IN THE KEY OF SALVATION". Enjoy and be Blessed!
