Peter Mayer is a Minnesota artist who crafts lovely, intelligent songs. Sometimes whimsical and often profound, "Million Year Mind" is one of very favorite albums. Each song is catchy enough to love at first hearing, but they also wear well with time, and with smart lyrics they bear a deeper listen. Peter Mayer is a masterful guitar player, but he is never showy---he wields his guitar with a gentle strength and confidence, as on "Holy Now" and "Fall." The gorgeous "Now Touch the Air Softly" is a musical setting for William Jay Smith's poem, "A Pavane for the Nursery," but it translates to a perfect love song. As with all of his work, many of the songs touch on his life philosophy, and range from the humorous ("Brand New Harley" and "The Dark") to the profound ("Charlie Porter" and "One More Circle"). It is clear from listening to this album that Mayer loves to write music, and that love of his craft shines bright on this album.
