Inuit soul in four part harmony. Traditional singing and drumming.
Bio / Background
Pamyua is an indigenous Alaskan Native band that fuses Arctic Inuit traditions with world rhythms. Their music features unique Inuit songs and dances from Alaska, inspired by funk, R&B and jazz. Though this first album is mostly traditional.
The group masters the ability to mix traditions with no boundaries, while still holding on to their Native roots. It is the enchanting harmonies, the sound of the didgeridoo, and the thunderous roll of the African djembe that causes a rich explosion of culture. - We like to call it Tribal Funk & World Music!

"Mengluni" is an intimate journey through the magical world of Pamyua's diversity of influence. Mengluni, which means 'The Beginning' in the Yup'ik language, introduces liquid vocal harmonies. Four-of-the-ten songs highlight the talents of Danish pianist Kristoffer Jul, which blend beautifully with the four-part harmonies.
The songs represent a vital cultural connection between tradition and a perpetuating spirit of cultural identity. "Mengluni" features Yup'ik Inuit dance songs from Southwestern Alaska. These songs, composed by a variety of Yup'ik composers, invite listeners in to embrace a glimpse of Inuit culture. The living traditions of the Pamyua members are the foundation for Pamyua's identity and this album translates these indigenous themes in a fresh musical form.
