A dynamic band from Greece; a wise mix of electro, dub, ambient, tribal drumming and ancient Greek musical tradition, played in an almost free jazz mode, and with a post-rock feeling. From Dorian war rhythms to hip-hop.
Bio / Background
It's almost ten years now that electronic music is known and accessible in Greece.
Thus consciences have been shaped and the youth has found out a new lifestyle.
However, musicwise things have not changed that much unless you count on the influence that house music had on bouzouki pop stars. The fact is that electronic music(plus all the associated subgenres) has not reached a certain degree of maturity and styles haven't emerged yet.
But there are exceptions.
Like PALYRRIA.Halfway between the sky and the sea, east and west, past and future. PALYRRIA are maybe the beginning of a new current that may shape the aspect of future music in Greece.
Over a solid ''band'' base PALYRRIA combine live improvisation and sonic experimentation, harsh yet warm analog electronics, intense tribal drumming and customised traditional balkanian instruments(lyre,ud,luth).Their electronic ,industrial and dub background melts in a swirl of ancestral sounds played in an almost free jazz mode.
↓ more ↓Their music is a unique, exciting trip over 4000 years of rhythm, harmony and melody. From Dorian war rhythms to hardbeat, from the Cretan hop dances to jungle, from oriental tsifteteli to raga, from ancient greek ritual rhythms to dub, from Miles Davis to Leftfield. Far away from the trap of easy ethno PALYRRIA,with the ten compositions of their debut album, open new ways, experimental yet popular.
The main actors of PALYRRIA come from a long way of musical action:the drummer Panagiotis ''Chico''Katsikiotis has spent most of the 80's playing with the most dymamic bands of Athens and has conducted researches on electronic drumming and ethnorhythmology with some of the most prolific compositors of electronic and new music in Greece.During the 90's he plays with Psarantoniss, maybe the most respected traditional Cretan lyre musician:4 LP's and a participation in SFINX,ATELER D' ETHNOMUSICOGIE,well known Belgian festival of world music, will occur from this collaboration.
In 1999 with a long time friend of his,the multiorganist and analog synth connaisseur Takis Tsourogiannis, starts PALYRRIA as a live group who plays intense, ancestral beats with electro, industrial, dub and brakbeat background and with thematics from sounds and images that connect the outer past with the outer future.
The main direction of the band was shaped with the arrival of Artemis Kangas,a former jazz guitarist absorbed in the magnificent world of traditional instruments, who added the sonic elements that define the PALYRRIA sound.
During the winter of 1990-2000 PALYRRIA perform a series of concerts in the now defunt HYPERSYNTELIKOS HEALTH SPEED CLUB,the notorious temple of the ''other'' music in Athens. What remained is a number of recordings that are included in their debut album ''ZERO GRAVITY''out on CUTCITY(the experimental sublabel of RUBBER RECORDINGS)during January 2002.Limited edition digipack cd.Check for more infos:www.rubber.gr,www.palyrria.com.
