Keyboard-drenched hard rock with a massive backbeat. Brought full circle with a fearless artistic vocalist to create an unmatched intensity.
Editorial review
Organ-bass-drums trio Oh My God manages to generate a lot of noise on their second self-released CD, The Action Album!. Keyboard player Iguana sets up most of the racket, playing his organ as if it were a heavily distorted electric guitar much of the time, though drummer Zach Nold is left plenty of space in the mix and singer Bill O'Neill drops in some bass guitar here and there. The result is still a spacious sound, but a frequently harsh one. The Chicago-based band seems to have been listening to a couple of decades' worth of Midwest art rock predecessors -- including Devo, Pere Ubu, and Suicide -- and in their lyrics they often take a quirky, ironic tone sometimes reminiscent of Steely Dan, that is, when they're not being deliberately obscure. The intention here is to create a unique context that requires no explanation beyond itself. Why do all the song titles and all the lines of the lyrics end in exclamation marks (except the ones that end in question marks)? Why do songs take sudden right angles halfway through and develop different (though still rudimentary) melodies? Because they do. On the last two tracks, "Letter 12/98!" and "Where Are We?," Oh My God dispenses with even a modicum of conventional musicality. The former track, which runs over ten minutes, finds O'Neill reciting a mundane letter before giving way to extended industrial sounds, while the latter alternates a solo piano figure with a sound reminiscent of a sonar blip. Oh My God is in no danger of reaching a mainstream audience with such work, but there is a more limited audience for the avant-garde that will enjoy it. Bio / Background
Sounds like a Christian-rock band? It's not. But oh my god doesn't have a notarized contract on file at the devil's office, either. THIS CHICAGO ROCK BAND IS NOT AFFILIATED WITH GOD OR SATAN (though the band admires both their work).
No, oh my god is an Earthbound rock band--a killer one. Billy O'Neill (vocals/bass), Ig (organ/vocals) and Bish (drums/vocals) can out-punk, out-pop and out-rock 'em all, and they're doing that one show and one album at a time.
Formed in late '99, this utterly unique organ-bass-drums trio unleashes captivating tones and razor-sharp hooks in song after striking song...from the piano-driven pop of "February 14" and "There Goes the World" to the raucous rock of "The Uptown Lumber" and "Pearls of Wisdom.
↓ more ↓" Even in ripping rock tunes like "Get Steady" and "Volatile," it's Billy's infectious vocal melodies that step to the fore, backed by the overdriven organ of Ig (who has played with Junior Wells, Buddy Guy, Otis Rush, Van Morrison, Jeff Healey and more) and the titanic drums of Bish.
Oh my god has earned a constant stream of praise from press all over the U.S. as they've toured hundreds of shows each of the last few years. And the band's releases--a self-titled EP (2000) and the albums "Well" (2001), "The Action Album" (2002), "Interrogations & Confessions" (2003) and "You're Too Straight to Love Me" (2004)--have seen them grow into one of the tightest, most wildly original rock bands anywhere. Sounds like hype? Ask the thousands of concert-goers around the States who've left the room saying "OH MY GOD!" after a show.
