Southern Soul - smooth, sensual with a deep sense of Funk.
Bio / Background
"At the end of the day, as an artist, I should only and ultimately be judged by my music," says Mr. David. If only the industry followed that rule. Mr. David's debut album " JODY IS BACK " will certainly surprise ears and be held as one of this years hottest Southern Soul albums.
Mr. David, influenced by the likes of Bobby Womack, "he made me want to sing, period , and other R&B legends, mixes 80's R&B, with 90's reality, and a twist of southern soul, which Mr. David claims is in demand now. Executive Produced by music mogul Tony Mercedes and blessed by the late, but never forgotten Ms. Barbara Thomas CEO of Gunsmoke Records whom Mr. David dedicates the success of this album. Mr. David started recording his album as a means of raising money to assist Ms. Thomas in her race against cancer. As fate would have it Ms. Thomas would pass before its completion, but made both Tony Mercedes and Mr.
↓ more ↓David promise her on her death bed that they would complete the album and not allow her legacy in the Southern Soul / Blues to be forgotten. Jody Is Back is packed with strong tracks written and produced by several up and coming producers. "I didn't want the names and status of big name producers to overshadow my project because I'm trying to establish myself," explains Mr. David. This approach gave Mr. David the opportunity to co-write and produce several tracks himself
"Shoo Da Wop", the first single featuring Sir Charles is an infectious party record. It has been quoted as being the Southern Soul club anthem for 2004.
Just like "Shoo Da Wop," all the songs on Jody Is Back are based on "every day common life." "The market is so flooded with everybody talking about how much money they got, and this, that and the other. I deal with situations that are true to life and common, situations that everyone can relate to."
"Sara Smile" a romantic slow jam, is the total opposite of "Shoo Da Wop", according to Mr. David. I was such a big Hall and Oates fan, and just felt the need to cover their record. I hope they appreciate it, but my secret weapon that will have everybody on the dance floor this summer is a song called Slide On. It's just a great dance record!
Mr. David is no stranger to the music industry, he's been performing since his early teens but it was not until he hooked up professionally with Tony Mercedes he would get the opportunity to see the fruits of his labor.
"I me Tony Mercedes when I was 16 years old," says Mr. David. "Tony was from Augusta and I lived 15 minutes away in Aiken SC." Mr. David and his brother would frequently compete in local talent shows where Mercedes would always have groups competing as well. "I would always challenge his artists 'cause I thought they were just ok! After eliminating all his artists, he took me on."
That was the beginning of a long and prosperous business relationship. When asked, Tony Mercedes said "there's only one word to describe Mr. David's album, soulful."
