Independent, countrified-rock with heavy electronic undertones - a mess of sounds and style
Bio / Background
Mooncalf self recorded and produced this album in various bedrooms, bathrooms and bars throughout Ballard in Seattle Washington from 2003 - 2005. The album was released in November, 2005 and quickly got regular airplay on the ultimate independent radio station, KEXP 90.3 fm in Seattle.
Right now the band is on hiatus from live shows and is recording their follow-up album with the members spread from Seattle to the Caribbean.
CD baby says:
Built to Spill-ish melodies, Granddaddy-like instrumentation, Flaming Lips-esque song structures, and Sparklehorse-y crackly hi-end production. Here's an album that is easily placed next to the trademark sounds of all four of those bands. Like true rock idealists, Mooncalf take neither themselves, their songs, nor the business too seriously and manage to forgo the typical rock'n'roll band rhetoric for actual strength in songwriting and performance.
↓ more ↓Certain affected pieces of percussion and dreamy guitar lines lead the listener to reminiscing about a time when elements of electronic music were just starting to make their debut with college rock, when those elements were still really painstakingly planned out and plied to their full potential rather than the current attitude of "just put a drum machine behind it" caught on. If you were ever a fan of college rock between 1995 and 2002, this record is waiting for you.
