With hip-hop roots like a hundred-year oak, and a nu-metal bite that tears through any hip-hop preconception, the steely-eyed quintet from South St. Louis known as Midwest Avengers has returned with some chromed-out speed funk.
More Bad Brains than Brand New Heavies, their music is as at home on both alt-rock and progressive hip-hop stages. The vocalists/emcees were all that was left of the all-emcee version of Midwest Avengers. After creative dissonance and deaths of two of the group members, something needed to change, and choosing between hip-hop's 'keep it real' elitism and the industry's preference for high-polish was limiting their vision.
In 2004, just before the all-emcee version dispanded, they released "Bounce," a scorching track remixed by Midwest Avengers with rap-rock Mr. I. The song won several cage matches on the (former)105.
